Former Singapore Idol Hady Mirza’s recent arrest was due to offences involving the drug marijuana, according to new details that have emerged.

Mirza was caught at a land immigration checkpoint for the offences and was then sent to the Drug Rehabilitation Centre (DRC) in the Changi Prison complex, according to The New Paper (TNP).

Only his mother Mardiana Ahmad, 62, and Malaysian wife Nurjanna Nur Wahid, 25, were made aware about his arrest, both of whom are currently living in Johor Baru in Malaysia. Mirza’s friends and relatives reportedly had no knowledge of his arrest initially.

The 38-year-old previously ran his own chilli tempeh snack business under the name “Tempting Trading”, which he started in 2016. The business is no longer operating.

Mirza is also the co-founder of local group FRHM Youth, an organisation that supports Muslim education and conducts sports activities for youths, which he started in 2013. He left his position as the group’s director in 2014 to focus on his business, said TNP.

Mirza became the first Asian Idol in 2007 following his win in the second season of singing competition Singapore Idol in 2006. He has released two albums thus far, in 2006 and 2007. His debut album attained platinum status four days after its release.

He was recently in the news earlier this year after it was reported that he was a Grab driver.

DRC inmates undergo rehabilitation in the centre for up to three years and will not have a criminal record after their release.
