Singapore — Mediacorp’s annual awards ceremony, Star Awards held its 25th anniversary at its campus last evening.

It was a night of glitz and glamour to celebrate the best-of in Singapore’s Mandarin entertainment scene, featuring a slew of local stars and international artistes from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Cecilia Cheung presented the Top 10 Most Popular Artiste Award for both male and female categories. Chinese actress Wu Jinyan, who played Wei Ying Luo from the popular period drama “Story of Yanxi Palace” shared that she enjoyed Bak Kut Teh and couldn’t wait to try more of Singapore’s cuisine. She presented an award with Jerry Yan, most famous for his role as Dao Ming Si in “Meteor Garden”.

Other international artistes include Roger Kwok, Bowie Tsang, Tony Sun, Eric Chou, Joyce Cheng, Blue Lan and Kaiser Chuang.

This year, veterans beat the competition as they dominated the big awards as well as the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes award categories which is determined by votes from the public.

Bagging the top honours were Zoe Tay and Chen Hanwei, who walked home with the Best Actress and Best Actor award for their performances in “A Million Dollar Dream”.

Best Supporting Actor and Actress went to Chen Shucheng and Lin Mei Jiao, who beat out hot favourites like Andie Chen, Ian Fang, Aileen Tan, Shelia Sim, etc.

“The other four nominees are really good and I thought they had a better chance at winning,” shared Chen, who also snagged a Top 10 award later that night.

Chen Xiuhuan and Ling Ng both returned to showbiz after a long hiatus, each earning a spot in the Top 10 Most Popular Artiste category last evening. When their names were called, both were seen shocked at the announcement.

“I really didn’t expect to win,” said Chen, whose last win was in 1994. She stepped down from showbiz two decades ago to take care of her daughters.

She added: “I see this award as a motivation. For audiences who know me, they are quite familiar with me. But for the younger generation, they don’t really know who I am, so I think through the upcoming shows, I hope to re-introduce myself to them.”

Another veteran actress, Hong Hui Fang, also earned her first Top 10 Most Popular Artiste trophy in more than 30 years in the business. “This is my first Top 10 award but it’s enough. I am satisfied, she said during her acceptance speech.

Kym Ng was feted as the All-Time Favourite Artiste after winning the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes category for the 10th time last year. Dressed a beautiful white gown, she quipped: “Don’t call me a human, tonight, I am a goddess!”

During the backstage interview, the host-actress shared that the made a lot of revisions to her acceptance speech and rehearsed a couple of times prior to the big day so as to complete her thank-yous before the time limit. “I didn’t know why but my mind was blank when I was up there,” she laughed, after showing off her ‘goddess pose’.

This should be the official ‘All-Time Favourite Artiste’ pose, don’t you think so?
