Say, you have a product idea that will probably turn your side hustle into your dream business. But you have zero design skills and all those designing apps just seem too daunting. You can hardly put your ideas into words, much less draw them out with pen and paper.

This is where Canva, an online design and publishing tool, comes in. As their mission is “to empower everyone in the world to design anything and publish anywhere”, Canva is incredibly easy and intuitive to use. The best part is it comes with a wide variety of templates for print, social media, memorabilia, etc. that you can employ for your next project.

Here are some quick and easy steps you can take to create your professional-looking product mockup on Canva.

1. Sign up for Canva

Obviously, to use Canva, you’ll need an account. Canva offers three types of accounts to suit different needs: free, pro, and teams. Anyone can sign up for and use Canva for free, which already comes with more than 250,000 free templates, and more than a million free photos and graphics.

However, to fully unlock Canva’s potential (and yours), you will need Canva Pro (single user) and Canva for Teams (more than one user), available with a yearly premium. Pro users will get access to more than 610,000 premium and free templates with new designs daily, and more than 100 million premium stock photos, videos, audio and graphics. You can check the full benefits here.

2. Pick a template on Canva

Now that you have a Canva account, the world is your oyster. Whether you need to come up with a new packaging sticker, an apparel design, or posters to get the word out, you can find a template on Canva. Even if you only want to play around with the tools, you can create your own design on Canva and see where it takes you.

3. Edit it to your liking using Canva’s tools

If you know how to edit Microsoft PowerPoint slides, you’ll find editing a Canva template is rather similar. You can easily change the text, colours, and background, shift things around, add a new element, delete the unnecessary parts — you get the idea. Once you’re satisfied with the edits, you’re left with one last step.

4. Find a Smartmockup on Canva

To help you visualise your creation in the real world, you will need a mockup. Canva has more than 8,000 Smartmockups and can help you create inspirational product mockups in seconds. After choosing your Smartmockup, all you need to do is to select an image or design, such as the one you’ve edited in step three. Canva will automatically apply your design to the mockup, which you can then download and use in your business pitch.
