First dibs: Sooner or Later — Minimalistic cosy cafe along Haji Lane with Miso Caramel Brownie
Sooner or Later, a new minimalistic cafe, opened on 17 July 2022 along Haji Lane, boasting a white-grey colour palette.
The charming and quaint cafe was really cosy, with a handful of tables outside and only three tables within. It was decked with plants, adding a dash of green into the otherwise grayscale colour scheme.
The vibes at Sooner or Later were truly immaculate and I was thankful to have gotten a seat inside to get a respite from the blazing hot sun.
Sooner or Later was tastefully decorated with neon signs and cute signages, all of which had the cafe’s name on them. After taking pictures of every nook and cranny, my friend and I decided to order some food.
I initially wanted to try the Mentaiko Crab Meat Croissant which seemed to be a must-order at Sooner or Later, but my companion is allergic to shellfish. So, we ordered another dish that caught our eye––– Thai Chicken Croissant (S$10). It came served alongside some salted chips.
Sooner or Later’s Thai Chicken Croissant was pretty flavourful, with strips of chicken meat being doused in a lot of mayonnaise that had a slight kick to it, but thankfully it was not spicy. My friend who can’t take spice was able to scarf down the croissant with no problem. The vegetables served with it were fresh and gave a nice crunch to the croissant, and there was a good chunk of chicken meat within.
One gripe I had with the croissant was that it was served cold. I personally felt that if the food were served hot or warm, the flavours would be much more prominent. Additionally, S$10 for a chicken croissant was a steep price point. Nevertheless, it was still tasty.
Next, we got a dessert, Miso Caramel Brownie (S$5) which contained Valrhona dark chocolate and miso caramel. This brownie was simply delightful, and was caramelised on the top and sides, giving a nice crunch to each bite. It was also slightly salty, most probably due to the presence of miso, which helped to balance out the sweetness from the chocolate.
The inside was soft and fluffy, and was not dry at all. Additionally, I could finish the whole brownie without feeling a sore throat coming on. This is a must order at Sooner or Later.
For those who’d like to window shop while having a coffee, Sooner or Later has a second level which is actually a clothing brand called Plop Apparels that opens from Tuesday to Sunday at 12pm to 8pm.
All in all, the vibes at the cafe and the decadent desserts are a reason to visit Sooner or Later. The next time I’m here, I will try their ice cream that I did not manage to the first time round.
