Donnie Yen challenges martial arts actor stereotypes in legal drama
16 Dec - Playing a different kind of role in his new movie, Donnie Yen admitted that he hopes that people will see the breakthrough that he made through the new movie, "The Prosecutor".
The actor, who plays the titular character in the upcoming film, told the media during a press conference of the film that his goal has always been to satisfy the audience.
"I have made more than 80 films in 42 years. It is impossible for every film to be perfect. The most important thing is to stay true to my original aspiration and do my best in every film," he said.
Asked if the action scenes in the movie were challenging, Donnie said that it was not how hard the physical effort is, but that martial arts actors are the kind of people who must work twice as hard to let the audience see another side of them.
"Many people think that martial arts actors don't have the temperament of dramatic actors, so I have worked hard for so many years. In fact, I can also play the piano," he said.
"The Prosecutor" is based on real events, and tells the story of a poor young man who is deceived into admitting to drug trafficking charges. Despite being the prosecutor, Donnie's character, who was once a detective, risks his life and career to free a wrongfully accused man.
It is noted that the film is also helmed by Donnie himself and co-stars MC Cheung Tin Fu, Julian Cheung, Michael Hui and Francis Ng.
