Common hair concerns in Singapore and how to tackle them with Joon Haircare

The haircare brand is steeped in heritage yet has a strong scientific background thanks to its own laboratory.

Every so often, new brands arrive on the shores of Singapore. Joon Haircare, a recent addition to Sephora's list of coveted beauty brands, draws inspiration from founders Shiva and Kayvon Tavakoli’s Persian roots, using their grandmother's beauty rituals and ingredients sourced from their homeland. Coupled with their father’s salon empire and haircare laboratory, Joon Haircare combines heritage-inspired elements to provide individuals with exceptional hair care experiences housed in scientific expertise. Yahoo Life Singapore chats with founder Shiva Tavakoli on the brand's origins, how to tackle the heat and humidity in Singapore, and haircare tips for all, especially those who work out regularly.

Yahoo Life Singapore: The origins of Joon Haircare trace back to your Persian grandmother. Could you share more about that?

Shiva Tavakoli: My brother and I would spend summers with our grandparents in Iran. Our grandfather had his own spice and herb company where he would export Persian ingredients such as Saffron and Sumac worldwide. My grandma used many Persian ingredients in her cooking and beauty rituals. I remember watching her make hair masks, oils, and the mysterious beauty "potions" in her kitchen. Women have been doing this since ancient Persian times. We learned from her that these ingredients are great for consumption and suitable for use in beauty.

With our haircare experience working in our father's salons and what we learned about ingredients from our grandmother, we felt confident we could create a brand that used ancient Persian wisdom to address everyday haircare issues.

What does Joon stand for, and what can it do for everyday consumers?

Joon stands for my "dear" or "life" in Persian and is a cute word of endearment commonly used after a person's name. Joon is a solution-oriented haircare line that tackles concerns such as frizz, dry hair, an oily/dry or sensitive scalp, and thermal protection (to name a few) by harnessing the power of Persian beauty secrets and pairing it with modern chemistry to make practical and chic products you love to use and display on your bathroom counter or shower.

Which products from Joon Haircare will consumers in hot and humid Singapore benefit from?

We live in Houston, so we are also used to the hot and humid weather, so we ensured the products works well in this type of climate. As is the case in hot and humid weather, your hair can get oily quicker, so we tested to ensure the entire line was hydrating without being too heavy on the hair.

Our Saffron Rose Shampoo and Conditioner hydrates and smooths hair strands, creating frizz-free, shiny locks using ingredients like saffron, pistachio, rose and pomegranate. The Saffron Hair Elixir is also great because it’s a lightweight and fast-absorbing oil that is perfect for anyone looking to detangle, moisturise, smooth and add shine to their hair. It can layer with other products easily.

Also, if you live in more hot and humid weather, you will tend to have a lot of sweat and oil build-up on the scalp, so washing your scalp and hair with our Sumac Scalp Scrub is excellent as it gently exfoliates the scalp of build-up. It is also a shampoo that hydrates the hair strands without leaving the hair dry.

How should we approach haircare when travelling, for example, to cold climates and countries that use hard water?

I recommend using hydrating products such as the Saffron Hair Elixir, Saffron Rose Shampoo and Conditioner I mentioned before. The Saffron Hair Elixir will prevent static frizz while forming a barrier on the strand, protecting the hair from cold air and dryness. We sell the Saffron Rose Hydrating Set, which has travel-size versions of all three products: the shampoo, conditioner and hair oil.

If you use hard water, there is a big chance you have mineral build-up on your scalp. Massaging the Sumac Scalp Scrub into your scalp will clear your hair and scalp of this build-up. It would help if you were doing this once a week. You can also use a clarifying shampoo to rid the scalp of build-up. However, you should note most clarifying shampoos do contain sulfates, so you should not use them more than once a week, and possibly even less if you colour your hair.

Lastly, I recommend using a hair mask or deep hydrating treatment that thoroughly moisturizes the hair strands. You can add a few drops of the Saffron Hair Elixir to the Saffron Rose Conditioner or a hair mask and leave on hair for 5-10 minutes to create an even more intensive hydrating treatment.

What is your favourite Joon haircare product that you would recommend to anyone in a heartbeat? Why?

This is a difficult question because it would be both the Saffron Hair Elixir and Sumac Scalp Scrub. However, our hair oil has been around the longest and has a bit of a cult following already, so I would recommend that product. The hair oil is versatile as it can be used on damp or dry hair before styling as a heat protectant or after styling as a finishing oil. It also reduces blow dry time and is a forgiving oil – meaning if you accidentally put a little too much, it won't make your hair a greasy mess. It absorbs quickly and easily. I haven't always found this to be true with other hair oils. It appeals to various people with different hair types and textures.

The Sumac Scalp Scrub, our latest launch, is also fantastic. It is a dual scrub and shampoo that gently exfoliates the scalp of build-up, flakes, oil, and pollutants but still hydrates the hair strands. Sumac, a Persian spice rich in antioxidants, helps combat environmental aggressors. Mint and Tea Tea soothe the scalp and help control oil production. Fenugreek, castor oil and olive oil provide nutrients and help promote new healthy hair growth. The Scrub is also easy to apply with the needle-nose tip and rinse out due to its fine exfoliants.

You grew up in the hair industry, where your father owned a successful salon empire and haircare laboratory; what haircare tips can you share?

Many people know to use a hair mask after a workout, but did you know that the salt from sweat can dry out the hair? If you apply a mask before your workout, the heat from your body activates the mask's ingredients, pushes moisture into the hair strand and seals the hair from absorbing all the sweat/salt. The heat from your workout allows the ingredients to penetrate deeper, so all you have to do when you finish working out is to rinse and go!
