Celebrate Pi Day with These 5 Irrationally Delicious Pies
Pi Day, March 14th, when the date reads 3.14, might just be one of my favorite national food days. Personally, I'm not a "math person," but I am a baker who is never going to pass up an opportunity to celebrate with pie. If you'd like to whip up something sweet and irrationally delicious to do your part for Pi Day, I've got five of our best pie recipes for you. They range from classics (like apple pie) to seasonal favorites (Key lime, strawberry). You might want to save all of these, just in case.
But if that isn't enough for you, we do have a list of 80+ of our favorite pie recipes, which is a lot of pies so it does kind of feel like the list goes on forever without repeating. These are the kinds of mathematical constants I like in my life.
Brown Butter Apple Pie
We're starting off with the most classic of all pies: apple. I'm of the opinion that apple pie is good any time of the year, even for Pi Day. I also believe that brown butter may be the most magical thing you can add to baked goods. It adds extra rich and nutty flavor and takes this pie to a whole new level. Here, brown butter is used in both the filling and the crust, taking that most American of pies and making it into a caramel-apple flavored masterpiece.
Chocolate Mocha Pie
Here's one for the chocolate lovers. This espresso-spiked pie has a pudding-like consistency and pairs well with a cup of coffee. It starts with a sweet pastry pie dough, which is then blind baked until golden. The cudstard-like filling is prepared on the stove-top, poured into the prepared crust and chilled in the fridge. It's all topped off with fresh whipped cream and chocolate covered espresso beans.
Key Lime Slab Pie
I can't resist a Key Lime Pie, and here we have it in slab pie form so it can serve a crowd, or your whole family for Pi Day. Key Lime Pies traditionally have a graham cracker crust, which we love, but here we've got a buttery pastry dough just to switch things up a little. It's tart, it's creamy, it's the perfect sweet endeavor for the day of pies.
Double-Strawberry Pie
With a flaky pie crust and an actual pile of strawberries, this old-school warm weather recipe is best with peak-season strawberries, but you can make it with frozen strawberries if your local strawberries aren't quite there yet. You can find it alongside other classic pies at Sugaree's Bakery in New Albany, Mississippi, but if you can't make it there on Pi Day, we've got the recipe so you can try it at home.
Hot Chocolate Icebox Pie
Frothy, creamy, chocolaty, and covered in little marshmallows, this pie is delicious even when it isn't hot cocoa weather. In fact, that might just be the best time to make one. This cool and creamy pie is a great option for Pi Day because half the fun is in the toppings. It's topped with a mound of marshmallow whipped cream, which mean you get one of those mile-high pie effects when you cut a slice.
