New claypot rice supper spot open till 6am with kung pao & basil onion chicken or pork
If you love smoky claypot chicken rice but wish it were available even during the wee hours, perhaps Ho Lee Fook Claypot Rice at Kovan might be worth a visit! (I know what it sounds like. Shh.)
This new place in Upper Serangoon Road is for night owls craving claypot in the middle of the night. Not only does the stall operate during the day, but it also opens from midnight till 6am six days a week with dishes priced affordably under S$10.
Its Signature Claypot Rice comes in prices S$8 for Small and S$18 for Large if you’re sharing with a group. A unique twist that the stall provides is that the dish comes in both the traditional Non-spicy as well as a Spicy version for a special hot and smoky flavour.
What’s also interesting is that Ho Lee Fook’s Signature Kung Pao Chicken/Pork (S$6.50) is also cooked in a claypot, as are all of its dishes.
Customers can choose between Chicken and Pork for all the meat dishes as per their liking. They come in different flavours that you might not usually see, such as Basil Onion (S$6.50), Screw Pepper (S$6.50) and Mala (S$7.50). Others like Minced Meat Tofu (S$5.50) are some you can top up your meal with as well.
Andre (25) started Ho Lee Fook because of his love for the dish, especially the crispy rice at the bottom. “The beauty of cooking with claypots is that they retain and distribute heat evenly, allowing food to cook at a lower temperature, which helps preserve vitamins and minerals,” he said.
However, he realised that most claypot rice dishes he had tried had burnt rice rather than a golden crisp. As such, he was driven to experiment and eventually develop a recipe that would give the rice a perfect scorch without the burnt taste.
Andre’s aim is simple: to keep the tradition alive. He hopes that by creating unique new flavours, claypot rice can continue to be enjoyed by people of all generations.
