SINGAPORE — There’s a new burger joint in town with a Korean twist. Burger+, on level one of Wisma Atria, serves gourmet burgers with premium ingredients such as US-imported beef, fresh avocado and truffles. Don’t be fooled by its name: the restaurant also serves Korean-style fried chicken, Korean beers and Korean ice cream, as well as fries and milkshakes.
Burger+ was started by two co-founders, Singaporean Daniel Koh and South Korean Lee Mi-hyun. Koh tapped on Lee’s experience of over 10 years in the South Korean fast casual industry (that’s slightly higher-end than plain fast food) to formulate their recipes.
The restaurant serves a wide range of burgers, ranging from the basic cheeseburger ($13.80), to signature burgers including the Korean Bulgogi Burger ($13.80), the Truffle Burger ($21), the Fish Burger with Avocado ($10.90) and the Avocado Bacon Cheeseburger ($17.20). We’re guessing the avocado helps to relieve some of the guilt of scarfing down hamburgers.
Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore had a taste of some signature items from the menu and the overall quality of the food is great. The burger buns are partially made with potato flour, though we couldn’t really tell the difference from normal buns. The beef patties topped with gooey US cheddar cheese are juicy and succulent. The Truffle Burger did not have an overpowering truffle flavour even though real truffle shavings are used, as did the Truffle Fries ($9.80).
There are four kinds of fried chicken: Honey Chicken, Soy Garlic Chicken, Yangnyeom Chicken and Hot Yangnyeom Chicken. Prices range from $9.20 for six pieces of “wingettes and drummettes” to $28.20 for a whole chicken. The fried chicken is made from fresh chicken, not frozen chicken. We tried the Soy Garlic and Yangnyeom Chicken, which is slightly spicy. They were really crispy and the sauces were just right as a savoury accompaniment.
For those who fancy the Korean dining culture of chi-maek (beer and chicken pairing), Burger+ serves alcoholic drinks, including exclusive house-crafted Korean-style draft and bottled beers ($8.80-$12.90) and red and white wines ($11.50-$13.20).
The milkshakes are thick and creamy and not overly sweet. They come in three flavours: Woo Yu, or vanilla ($6.80), Hazelnut ($7.80) and Avocado Honey ($9.80).
Besides milkshakes, desserts here also include ice cream. The signature ice creams are the Woo Yu Jollypong ($5.80), which is vanilla ice cream topped with the Korean cereal snack, Jollypong; as well as the Woo Yu Injeolmi and Red Bean ($5.80), which comes with toppings of chewy Korean rice cake and red beans.
Burger+ currently has one store in Wisma Atria, but it has plans to open more outlets in the future.
