Bukit Timah Market’s beloved kway chap stall to move end-Sep 2024
Considered one of the best kway chap stalls in Singapore by some, 138 Kway Chap & Porridge is leaving Bukit Timah Market on 22 Sep for a new venture just roughly 8 minutes away.
If you frequent Bukit Timah Market, you’ve likely noticed this popular stall, known for the friendly uncle at the counter and its long daily queues. Fun fact: the trust is mutual — he allows customers to take their own change from the container after making a payment.
From its neon purple sign to its dishes, 138 Kway Chap & Porridge exudes classic old-school Teochew vibes through and through. The star of the menu is, of course, the signature Kway Chap (S$6 for a 1-person set), featuring a bowl of kway — flat, broad rice sheets simmered in dark soy soup — served alongside an assortment of pork cuts.
The pork is freshly imported from Indonesia each morning, and every order of kway chap includes a generous mix of pork meat, skin, and intestines, along with tau pok, hard-boiled egg, crunchy vegetables, and springy fishballs.
Each bite offers a satisfying combination of silky smooth kway, perfectly braised intestines, and jelly-like pig skin. For an extra kick, add a dab of their tangy-sweet chilli sauce for an explosion of flavour.
While some might find the price steep, the loyal customer base proves its value — it usually takes 10-15 minutes to get your food during the busy lunch hour. Make sure to stop by and enjoy a taste of 138 Kway Chap & Porridge’s famous kway chap before they close their doors this Sunday.
But don’t worry — though they’re moving, they won’t be going far! Starting 3 Oct, you’ll find them joining other Bukit Timah Market hawkers at their new spot on Jalan Seh Chuan, as the food centre will cease operations completely in Oct. So, while it’s a farewell to the previous location, it’s definitely not goodbye to the delicious kway chap we all love.
