Zhang Yimou to helm "The Three-Body Problem" movie?

18 Jun - Despite already having two screen adaptations, it was reported that there will be another adaptation of Liu Cixin's "The Three-Body Problem", to be produced and helmed by Zhang Yimou.

The news was announced by Beijing Enlight Media's Chairman Wang Changtian at the opening forum held at the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival, saying that his company as well as The Three-Body Universe will be working together for the film adaptation of the sci-fi giant.

Said Wang, sci-fi movies represent the growth of a country's film industry and that the genre still has a lot of room for development in China. He hopes that "The Three-Body Problem" will not only capture the essence of the novel, but also bring about breakthroughs and innovations, leading the future of Chinese movies.

It is noted that author Liu Cixin once expressed in an interview that he would love for Zhang Yimou to helm the movie adaptation of his book, saying that Zhang has unlimited potential and can balance between being both Chinese and international.

The book, which won the Hugo Award, was made into a series twice - one which was broadcasted on CCTV early last year, and another helmed by David Benioff and DB Wise for Netflix.
