Yu Zheng angered netizens over Little Dragon Girl issue
24 Jul - Chinese producer Yu Zheng has sparked netizens' anger yet again after he reiterated his previous information regarding his 2014 drama, "The Romance of the Condor Heroes".
As reported on Oriental Daily, amid rumours of divorce between Michelle Chen and Chen Xiao, Yu recently mentioned the said series that united the two stars, and reminded netizens yet again that Michelle was not his first pick for the character of Little Dragon Girl.
During a live broadcast a few days ago, the producer said that his first choice for the role was Angelababy, and that she was unable to do the series because she had fallen ill at the time.
Netizens who saw the live couldn't help but expressed annoyance with Yu Zheng, with one commenting, "We've known this for a while now. Why bringing it up again now?"
It is noted that Michelle's casting as the character Little Dragon Girl (aka Xiao Longnu) was blasted by netizens when it was first announced in 2013, with many saying that Michelle's baby face does not suit the character's ethereal beauty. Yu defended Michelle at the time, saying that he firmly believed that the actress could take on the role well.
However, in 2020, the producer shared a photo of Angelababy on Weibo donning the costume for the character for a variety show, and posted, "If you hadn't been sick and did 'The Romance of the Condor Heroes', I wouldn't have been ridiculed by everybody. This is the biggest regret of my life."
Yu was heavily criticised afterwards with many accusing him of indirectly insulting Michelle.
