Yang Mi left Versace over t-shirt controversy

13 Aug – Chinese actress Yang Mi has recently announced that she is ending her role as the Chinese ambassador of Italian luxury brand, Versace.

As reported on On CC, the actress revealed her decision via a statement released by her studio, following the July controversy whereby netizens revealed that the new Versace tee had listed Macau and Hong Kong as separate countries from China instead of Special Administrative Regions.

"As a Chinese citizen, Ms Yang Mi is very indignant that Versace's mistake blatantly defies the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China," the statement read.

Versace has apologised for the mistake, with its artistic director Donatella Versace stating on Instagram, "Never have I wanted to disrespect China's National Sovereignty and this is why I wanted to personally apologize for such inaccuracy and for any distress that it might have caused."

The brand reposted the message, and wrote, "The Company apologizes for the design of its product and a recall of the t-shirt has been implemented in July. The brand accepts accountability and is exploring actions to improve how we operate day-to-day to become more conscientious and aware."
