Singapore – One of the reasons I love watching musicals is dressing up for it, which adds to the anticipation of the performance. If you are headed for the fun and campy & Juliet Musical now showing at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, why not dress the part of your favourite character or add a few sartorial Elizabethan touches to your attire?

A few months ago, Yahoo Life Singapore had the privilege of being the only media who headed backstage to see and touch the costumes of & Juliet Musical in Melbourne before its arrival in Singapore. Read our review on the musical here. Yashith Fernando, who plays Francois, brought us around the set, and a rep from the costume team walked us through some of the more significant costumes in the show. Helmed by the award-winning Paloma Young, the & Juliet costumes the production team came up with were modern yet had touches of the Elizabethan age the script is based on. The result was absolutely stunning, dazzling and easy to wear. New items were bought off the racks and then distressed by the costume team. I observed that college jackets, Nikes, Converse shoes, poufy skirts, leather jackets, corsets, and Elizabethan/Victorian tops were utilised to create the various characters' looks. Tip: Look out for tiny details, such as velvets, satin, silks, lace, cotton and taffeta to complete your look. These sartorial items would also work well for your upcoming Halloween and Christmas parties.

If you have yet to get tickets to the incredible jukebox musical that explores the themes of female empowerment, finding oneself, gender fluidity and more, what are you waiting for? Are you concerned if the bard’s work may be too heavy and inaccessible? Rest assured, this modernised take on the bard's classic Romeo & Juliet is meant for everyone, whether you love literature or not. The witty script, countless plot twists, strong soundtrack, and solid casting make for a thoroughly enjoyable night out for musical lovers and those who are new to musicals.
It is rare (especially in Singapore) that patrons involuntarily sing along, waving their arms as the song and dance occur on stage. But that was exactly what transpired. The Saturday night performance I caught in Singapore's Sands Theatre even had a rousing standing ovation towards the show's end. So, round up your squad and take advantage of the ongoing discount when you see & Juliet Musical, which ends on 15 October.
