A sponge may seem like one of the most basic pieces of cleaning equipment in any kitchen. But look a little closer, and you'll see that not all sponges are created equal.

Taking the elbow grease out of tough stains, the aptly named Elbow Grease Magic Eraser is one such example.

On the surface, admittedly, the Magic Erasers look just like any other kitchen sponge. After using it for the first time though, I'm a convert.

It quickly made light work of cleaning my hob — a task we all know can take plenty of effort, especially if there are splodges of dried liquids like soup or pasta sauce.

I'd usually have to use something tougher to remove these, like a metal scourer, which can often leave behind annoying and unsightly scratches. But this nifty sponge cleans them up with just a quick swipe, leaving nothing behind but a shine.

Elbow Grease Magic Eraser: our review

First of all, this sponge doesn't need to be used along with the usual kitchen cleaning sprays (although you may still choose to). Not only does it help save the cupboard under your sink from being inundated with various sprays, it also removes the need for spraying harsh chemicals in your kitchen.

Instead, all it needs is a little water, so I just ran it under the tap to activate its "magical" method of cleaning. In reality, what's really going on is that it's made from melamine foam, which essentially acts as a windscreen wiper across your surface. This means it's tougher on stains without needing extra effort from you.

The density of the foam means there's less build-up in the sponge while you're cleaning, and I found I could just wipe off the collected debris from the bottom of the sponge.

Although it's billed as a kitchen sponge, of course it can be used anywhere in the house. I found it worked well on my bathroom taps, too.

I didn't try it myself, but I noticed other shoppers found the sponge worked wonders at cleaning crayon scribbles on the walls from rather creative children, or breathing new life back into scruffy white trainers.

Note: if you're going to use it on a painted wall, be sure to do a spot test somewhere that's usually covered up in case you do accidentally take any paint off.

Elbow grease sponge: Our verdict

Anything that can help me clean my home more easily and in less time is a big tick in my book — especially if it removes the need for extra cleaning products that clutter up cupboards, or bring harsh smells into my kitchen.

Plus, at under £5 for three sponges, these have proved their worth. I'll be reaching for my Magic Erasers time after time!
