Founder of Hong Ji Mian Shi Jia passed on at age 83, stall now run by 3rd generation

A heartbreaking announcement for all Hong Ji Mian Shi Jia enthusiasts: the founder, 83-year-old Mr Loke Siew Fook, passed away on 28 Jun 2024. This news has sparked a wave of grief across social media. Nestled in Telok Blangah Food Centre, the stall had garnered significant popularity over time.

According to a Facebook post by Death Kopitiam Singapore, Mr. Loke was diagnosed with end-stage lung cancer in May 2024 but was deemed unsuitable for chemotherapy or surgery.

He was hospitalised on 24 Jun after several falls at home, and on 26 Jun, doctors informed the family of his critical condition. Despite this, Mr. Loke requested to go home once his condition stabilised. On 28 Jun, he had dinner with over 20 family members and passed away peacefully in his sleep later that night.

Hong Ji Mian Shi Jia has been delighting the community with its delicious wanton mee since 1957. The classic dish has become a favourite among the neighbourhood and has been featured in several online publications.

A post by a member of Hawkers United – Dabao 2020 has sparked a surge of grief online. Many devoted customers expressed their sympathies upon learning of Mr. Loke’s passing. Chef Tinoq, one of the owners of Masala Curry Mee, also commented that Hong Ji Mian Shi Jia served his favourite old-school wanton mee in Singapore. If you still wish to enjoy this legendary wanton mee, the stall continues to operate under the 3rd generation of Loke’s family.
