$2 Mao Shan Wang & all-time low prices this durian season

As we suffer under the scorching sun, the king of fruits thrives across the border.

Yep, the durian.

Congratulations to hard-core fans of the spiky fruit (not me). With the bulk of imports coming from Malaysia — Penang, Pahang and Johor, durian plantation owners will be expecting a bountiful harvest this year, specifically for the Musang King (aka Mao Shan Wang) variety. Why? Say “thank you” to this crazy weather.

Let’s get scientific. The increase in regional temperatures gives durian trees the optimal conditions to bloom. When exposed to extreme heat, durians take in a greater amount of nutrients and of course, sunlight. This accelerates the ripening process and results in not only earlier but prolonged harvests! Ta-da.

FYI, I also heard that we’ll see enhanced flavours and textures from the fruit this year.

LEXUS DURIAN KING - STOREFRONT

If you’re unaware, Singapore’s durian season usually spans Jun to Sep. According to local vendor Durian Delivery, the availability of durians will hit an all-time high in Aug, with the “CHEAPEST MSW (MAO SHAN WANG) OF THE YEAR!” Take note ah.

Referring to a report from a Malaysian publication, The Star — the market price of durians will be lowered as there are substantial quantities currently available.

That’s kinda true.

This season, it was common to see countless Durian Deals that have taken the internet by storm. Lexus Durian King at Serangoon is a recent one.

LEXUS DURIAN KING - MAO SHAN WANG PROMO

On 25 Jun, the stall held a Musang King Flash Sale priced at S$8 per kilogram. Additionally, Pioneer Generation and CHAS (Community Health Assist Scheme) card holders were entitled to purchase 1 Mao Shan Wang for S$5! They then gave away free durians and coconut drinks to those with the aforementioned cards and Merdeka Generation customers on 27 Jun.

Having sold 1,000 kilograms of durians in a day, you can imagine the queue.

WANG SHENG LI - MAO SHAN WANG PROMO

Wang Sheng Li at Bishan is stretching their S$2 per durian promotion till mid-Jul. Unsurprisingly, 200 kilograms of Musang King were sold out in less than an hour. Psst, last I checked, the promo is still on! What’s more, the stall is pricing their MSW at S$8 per kilogram and Black Gold MSW at S$12 per kilogram.

Don’t say bojio. Brace yourselves though, I’m pretty sure that there are more to come.
