New in town: Dapur Hassan — Singapore national football team’s goalkeeper opens 2nd stall selling nasi lemak & mee soto

It’s not everyday that you spot an athlete like Singapore’s national football team goalkeeper, Hassan Sunny, cooking and serving you food at a heartland kopitiam food stall. Yes, Muslim-owned Dapur Hassan just opened their 2nd outlet at 144 Tampines Street 12 on 22 Aug 2023.

Their flagship stall presently sits at 872C Tampines Street 86; no wonder people keep proclaiming that East side is the best side (giving you the side eye).

At 39 years of age, Hassan bin Abdullah Sunny is a distinguished Singaporean professional footballer, serving as a goalkeeper for the Singapore Premier League club, Albirex Niigata, and the national team. He is touted as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Southeast Asia as well as in Singapore’s history.

The stall presents well-known classics like Nasi Lemak (S$4), Lontong (S$4) and Mee Rebus (S$4). The highest-priced dish is Nasi Sambal Goreng (S$6.50), which consists of plain rice, a fried chicken wing, begedil, paru goreng (deep-fried beef lung), sambal egg, sambal tumis, serundeng, and sambal goreng (stir-fried tempeh, long beans and tau kwa).

To zhuzh up your meals, you can choose to top up additional sides such as Begedil (S$1), Sambal Fishcake (S$1.50), Sambal Quail Eggs (S$1.50 for 5 pieces), and my all-time favourite Fried Tempeh (S$0.80) (a treat I’ll eagerly savour, much like French fries).

For Tampines residents or fans who want to catch a glimpse of him (or possibly an autograph) at either one of his stalls, you’ll be glad to know that Hassan manages the stall from time to time during his football off-season. His wife and family handle most of the cooking in-house.

Head down to either one of Dapur Hassan’s branches today, not only to catch sight of the star, but also to have a taste of their delicious Muslim-friendly meals.
