Top 10 hair colour trends to try in 2017
Wondering what’s the next hair colour frontier after balayage, grey and galaxy hair colours?
We bring you the latest hair colour designs that will be trending in 2017.
Trend 1: GLITTER - The perfect holiday hair colour
Once in a awhile, a quirky trend comes along that you either hate or love.
As magically messy as it looks, glitter is the perfect holiday hair to sport this Christmas.
Glitter doesn’t always mean loud though!
Use it sparingly at the right places, and it can brighten up your overall look.
For those of you who don’t have time to go for a hair colour retouch, glitter roots are also a great way of celebrating your natural hair roots.
We don’t know of any hair salons which offer this yet, however, you can actually try this at home by applying the glitter on your hair directly with a clear hair gel and use a small brush to paint on the glitter.
Consider adding decorative stars or hearts to give it the extra sparkle.
A winning holiday hair design if you can handle the mess!
Trend 2: Pixelated hair colour
Pixelated hair colours, as its name suggests, resembles pixels.
Though it’s definitely not for everyone, it’s the perfect trend to get on board if you are one of those who like to stand out and be fashion-forward.
I know we’ve already seen it in 2016, but we predict that we will see this more as more hairstylists pick up this technique.
Pixelated Hair by 99 Percent Hair Studio @ Katong MODA
We first saw it done by 99 Percent Hair Studio at their Katong outlet.
However, we’re seeing stylists innovate more on the 3D technique more and more in recent months.
Pixelated Hair Colour by Hair by Xavier and Avant Garde Plan B
However, keep in mind that for the effect to be evident your hairstyle has to be straight and structured.
Hence, you may have to do a keratin treatment after the hair colour or rebonding before colouring to achieve this effect.
Trend 3: Hello ultra bright hair accents!
2017 is all about ‘less is more’.
Vibrants accents are not over-the-top bold and they are perfect for trying bold colours without damaging your whole head with bleach.
Accent Red and Gold by Justin from Zinc Korean Hair Salon
Hair by Salon Vim @ 313 Somerset
Best part is, since only the hair ends are bleached and coloured, you can always snip them off if the bleach has ruined your hair in the long run.

Trend 3: Good news is… Grey is not going away any time soon!
We’ve seen lots of greys in 2016; the reason why it is a favourite for many people is because it helps one stand out… without looking too bright or ah lian.
Pure full-on greys are however, starting to look a little tired.
Now, we are seeing hairstylists innovating to produce different hues of grey.
Smokey Lilac / Silver Grey by CLEO Hair & Make @ Clarke Quay The Central
Lilac Hair by 99 Percent Hair Studio @ Katong
When grunge meets glam - smokey lilac is one hair colour besides rose gold that’s got people obsessing over.
Almost everyone can pull off this look, unlike pastel shades that tend to only suit certain skin tones.
Smokey lilac is the perfect blend of grey and pastel shades, and is definitely one colour you should seriously consider dyeing your hair to look smokingly gorgeous!
Grey Blonde Balayage by J7Image
Grey Gradation by Hair by Xavier Leong
We’re also seeing hairstylists applying various techniques to spice up the greys with ombres / balayage as the obvious choices.
But do note that Grey ombre is notoriously hard to achieve, due to the huge contrast between the hair at the roots and hair at the ends.
Not many can achieve the gradation without a hard line!
Hair by CLEO Hair & Make
For those who find the greys a little lacklustre, we also see hairstylists mixing in a little colour to make the grey pop.
Trend 4: Blue will be the most requested vibrant hair colour for 2017
No surprise there, since we’re already seeing a lot of blues in 2016.
Midnight blue by Salon Vim @ Wisma Atria
Blue Balayage by 99 Percent @ Orchard Central
We’re just in love with these drop-dead gorgeous galaxy blues.
Why have plain old blue hair when you can have the galaxy in your hair?

Or channel ocean vibes with this flowy mermaid hair!
Denim Blue by Picasso Hair Studio
If there’s one fashion item in your wardrobe that is an eternal classic, it’s denim.
Denim Blue by Color Bar by Full House Salon
Naturally, drawing inspiration from this fashion piece and coming up with the denim hair trend makes sense.
You can’t go wrong with denim and you definitely can’t go wrong with denim hair.
Ash Blue by AVENTA Hair Salon
Blue Highlights by Act Point Salon @ Bugis
Ash Blue Ombre by CLEO Hair & Make
If you are not one for over-the-top bright hair colours, make the switch to ash blue hair, as ash hair colours are becoming increasingly popular.
Bubblegum Colour by Chez Vous Hair Salon
But if you love bright blue hair, then go for it!
Point is, blue hair is in, be it any shade, any hue.
Trend 5: Rainbow colours are here to stay
Let’s face it, rainbow hair is so beautiful that it’s probably never going out of style.
Rainbow Hair by 99 Percent Hair Studio @ Bugis Haji Lane
Sure, it’s not for the faint-hearted and it doesn’t suit everyone.
But for those of you who can rock this look, let your true colours shine!
Aurora Hair Colour by CLEO Hair & Make
Even if you think you can’t pull off this look, there’s still a way you can without looking like a clown.
How? The hidden rainbow trend of course!
Inside Rainbow Hair by Picasso Hair Studio
Hair by 99 Percent @ Katong MODA
As full-on rainbow hair is a bit much for most people, we are seeing hairstylists changing the rainbow design to make it more palatable for the less crazy office ladies among us.
Hair by Salon Vim @ Bugis Village
Holographic Rainbow Hair by Chez Vous Hair Salon
On top of going for fewer colours, we love how the metallic rainbow colours come together for a holographic effect.
Trend 6: Glow-in-the-dark phoenix hair
As if hair trends couldn’t get any more wild and cooler, you can now flaunt your hair colours even in the dark.
We’ve seen hints of this hair trend early on in 2016 but this hair creation from the legendary @guytang in November 2016 was the one that really got our attention.
If you’re wondering how it looks like in the day…
There you have it… a fiery phoenix!
How gorgeous is that?
However, we haven’t seen any local hair salons offering the glow-in-the-dark hair colour yet. Do you know of any?
Trend 7: Subtle violet
Speaking of ashy hues, even the violet trend has taken a more subtle approach.
Hair by CLEO Hair and Make
Vibrant violets are so last year, and ashy purple is now fashion-forward.
Hair by Style NA Korean Salon @ Parkway Parade
As the violet colour is not too far from browns, violet is definitely a more work-friendly colour you can wear to work.
Chocolate Mauve by Associate Director Shawn Chia from Chez Vous Hair Salon
Hannah Edelmen, owner of Brush In Hand Salon in Brooklyn, NY, created a to-die-for hue that looks as good as it sounds - Chocolate Mauve.
We love how this colour reminds us of the metallic hair trend, yet because of its brownish outlook, it might just be appropriate for the office.
We have yet to see many Singaporeans flaunting this trend, but we are willing to bet it won’t be long before this deliciously gorgeous colour has the locals swooning all over.
Trend 8: Brown never goes out of style
Not everyone has the luxury of going for vibrant hair colours.
Brown Highlights by Art Noise Japanese Hair Salon
But it doesn’t mean that you have to resign yourself to boring browns.
Corset Colouring Technique by Picasso Hair Studio
Brown hair may be the norm, but with new techniques like the corset colouring technique by Picasso Hair Studio, brown hair has a refreshing look and is never boring!
In fact, ash browns has been highly popularized by Korean dramas that almost everyone is opting for this specific shade of mocha brown.
Mocha Brown by Pro Trim Korean Salon @ Jurong East JEM
Although the mocha brown is really quite gorgeous, our personal favourite is still the balayage brown.
Balayage brown by 99 Percent Hair Studio @ Katong MODA
Not many hairstylists can do it well, so choose your salon wisely!
Hair by Chez Vous Hair Salon
If you can’t choose between the different shades of brown, why not have multiple shades all in one?
Hair by Style NA Korean Salon @ Parkway Parade
Trend 9: Kale is the Pantone colour of 2017!
Hair by Salon Vim @ Bugis Village
According to Pantone, 2017 will be the year of Kale.
Pantone has been pretty accurate with their colour of the year predictions and they have hinted Kale might just be one of the colours to be seen popping up everywhere.
So before we bid goodbye to the last remaining days of 2016, hurry to your favourite salon to refresh you tresses with next year’s ‘it’ colour before it becomes mainstream.
