In an unusual survey by Bunshun Online, 4,668 participants from the age of 13 to 91, comprising 39% males and 61% females, were told to choose the worst 15 Japanese actors. To many’s surprise, superstar Takuya Kimura, who has starred in so many dramas, came out No. 1 in the ranking. Apparently, he has been given this “worst actor” ranking for six consecutive times already.

Among the comments given by the survey participants, most thought that no matter what character Kimura portrays, he cannot seem to shed his aura. Others pointed out that Kimura is always acting as a cheeky character who confronts strength and power, stating that they are tired of the repetitiveness. One of the comments read, “Having an aura proves he’s a star and his acting is not horrible, but his potential is very limited.”

Although not quite related to whether Kimura acts well, some seem to harbour negative feelings towards him because of the disbandment of popular J-pop idol group SMAP, which Kimura was a part of.

One of the survey respondents said, “SMAP has already disbanded and I hate how he has the nerves to remain in Johnny’s.”

Another commented, “Being the only one remaining in Johnny’s, he must have received extraordinary treatment. I can’t help but think he’s a traitor.” One added that it was uncool of him to take the secure path with attractive dramas and solo singer activities while the others walk the arduous road.

The five-member boy band SMAP disbanded in 2016, with three of its group members — Goro Inagaki, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi and Shingo Katori — leaving the talent agency Johnny & Associates and forming a new group in 2017. In March this year, Masahiro Nakai also left the agency, leaving Kimura as the only one from SMAP still working in Johnny & Associates.

As strange as this ranking of the worst actors may be, the following actors also made it to the list:

2. Masahiro Higashide
