Stranger Things creators respond to deleted Jonathan Byers scene rumours

After Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers recently revealed they had been editing past seasons of the show without viewers noticing, the pair have responded to fans who thought they'd picked up on a Jonathan Byers scene that had been changed.

Last week, social media was shocked to discover Matt and Ross Duffer have been making changes to some of the past episodes, editing Hawkins as we know it. Speaking to Variety’s Showrunners Sitdown With Kate Aurthur, Matt explained, "We have ‘George Lucas-ed’ things also that people don’t know about," alluding to the Star Wars director and his habit of re-editing the films years after they have been released.

But while both brothers refused to spill the beans on the actual episodes that have been altered, (they did mention that Noah Schnapp's character Will Byers' birthday has changed from March 22nd to May 22nd) Ross added "you do have the physical copies though, the Blu-rays and stuff — you’d have to compare."

Fans then went down a rabbit whole of searching for scenes from earlier series of Stranger Things that might've been through the editing process. TikTok user @joshy.bassetts, alongside TV Line and Insider, reported Season 1, Episode 2, 'The Weirdo on Maple Street', has been changed, to paint Jonathan Byers in a slightly better light.

Reports alleged that the original episode featured Jonathan taking a creepy photo of Nancy Wheeler while she was getting dressed, snapping a picture of her in her bra. They claimed the episode apparently no longer features the clip, though we do still see Nancy's boyfriend at the time Steve Harrington confronting Jonathan in the school car park, for sneaking photos of them.

Now, though, the Stranger Things creators have shut down the claims, insisting the scene hasn't been altered. Taking to Twitter to address speculation, they wrote, "PSA: no scenes from previous seasons have ever been cut or re-edited. And they never will be."

Replying to a fan that asked, "So that also counts for the Jonathan spying on Nancy scene in S01, as many people believe?" they simply wrote "Yes."

That's the end of that one, then.
