Living in America when I was a teenager did me a lot of good. It made me strong. The first year was the toughest. I was a skinny, nerdy and bespectacled 13 yr old with a foreign accent. Starting school as the new kid in a public school (free school) was an experience. The racism was real. It might not seem like much now but to have kids make karate noises and speak in heavily Chinesey accents everyday or have bullies snatch your bag and then say "Give me some eggrolls and you'll have your bag back!" hurt like hell. (Eggrolls are basically springrolls. They're served in all Chinese restaurants there so it's like your typical Chinese food to them.) Life only got better when my parents put me in a private school where the kids were more open-minded and welcoming, and I got contact lens. The thing about Racism is that it's hard to imagine how painful it can be when you're the majority race. It's also easy to dismiss it as "no big deal". But when racist remarks are directed at you by a group of people who easily outnumber you, even a "no big deal" matter of someone mockingly imitating your supposed accent can hurt a lot. It was a little different for me. America wasn't my home country. I wasn't its citizen. I can't quite imagine having to deal with that same bullying I went through that 13th year of my life every single day for years in a country I was born in. Can you? 😌♥️
