Alchemee’s brands include 25-year-old Proactiv and Restorative Elements. According to its website, a third brand called In Defense of Skin is coming soon. It’s not known which brands were impacted by the layoffs.

These days, Alchemee is under the ownership of Taro Pharmaceutical Industries, which acquired it from Galderma in 2022. A spokesperson for the company did not respond to request for comment.

In the years in between, it has changed owners several times. It was owned by Guthy-Renker, the business behind many of the big infomercial-oriented beauty brands, for years, before being taken over by Nestlé Skin Health in 2016. Nestlé Skin was taken over by a consortium of investors in 2019, and rebranded to Galderma.

At the time of the acquisition by Taro, Shannon Pappas, the then global head of Alchemee who has since left the company, said: “We are excited for Alchemee and its marquee brand, Proactiv, to join the expansive Taro portfolio of prescription and over-the-counter dermatology products. This strategic move further positions Alchemee for continued growth in the skin care space.”

Proactiv was founded by the same dermatologists who later started Rodan & Fields, Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields.

Earlier this year, the Estée Lauder Cos.’s California brands — Smashbox, Too Faced and Glamglow — initiated layoffs in California as those businesses face challenges, while international operations have also been scaled back for some.
