Popular supper spot Kheng Nam Lee Teochew Porridge closing after 40+ years

Back in its heyday, Kheng Nam Lee Teochew Porridge (also known as Lim Joo Hin Eating House) once saw Andy Lau and Chow Yun Fatt chowing down on its food. Now, after more than 40 years, the popular supper spot on Havelock Road has announced its permanent closure on 20 Mar 2025.

Located near the heart of town, they’re open from 9am to 2am, which makes them a great supper spot. They also used to be a popular post-Zouk haunt for party-goers who needed something comforting and hearty after a night out.

They have over 70 different dishes, including some traditional items such as pork trotter jelly, hae bee hiam and handmade Teochew fishcakes. Popular “must-order” items are their braised duck, lor bak (braised pork belly), cockles and candied peanuts (peanuts fried with ikan bilis, chilli and sugar).

Although no reason was explicitly given by Kheng Nam Lee directly, a Facebook post mentioned that the boss wished to retire, and after more than 40 years in the business, it’s understandable.

The news of the closure drew mixed reactions. Although several netizens expressed sadness that Kheng Nam Lee was closing, just as many were quick to post scathing commentary about how the place was “overrated and too expensive”, and one even said “Good riddance”.

Whether the closures are due to sudden rental hikes/disputes, staffing issues, a lack of successors or hawkers growing too old to continue the business, it’s not pleasant to hear about.

How do you feel about the closure of Kheng Nam Lee Teochew Porridge? If you haven’t tried their food before, you can head down to 715 Havelock Road before their final day on 20 Mar 2025.
