How to make the new Yahoo Mail uniquely yours
The new Yahoo Mail 6 is now available and you can download it here.
In case you missed it, there’s a new version of Yahoo Mail in town. Compatible with accounts including Google’s Gmail and Microsoft’s Outlook, Yahoo’s brand spanking new Mail app is designed to make you fall in love again with the chore that’s emailing.
I know — there are tons of email apps out there, and each claims to be the best. Some are splashy, some are deeply customisable, and some try to anticipate your next move. And that’s all fine because when it comes to email apps, there’s no such thing as one size fits all.
Anyway, I’ve been using the new Yahoo Mail app for the past few weeks. Since sharing is caring, let me tell you about a few well-thought-through personalisation and customisation touches in the app that I dig:

You can change the colour theme to suit your style
One of the reasons many people don’t stick to an email app for long is because it seldom feels personal. On my last count, there are no fewer than 14 colour themes to choose from in Yahoo Mail; and each account can have its own colour.
Protip: if you’re using an iPhone and have enabled system-wide dark mode in iOS 13, the app will know about it and turn on its dark theme automatically.
You can personalise the push notifications, too
The ability to group messages into “Views” such as Deals, Travel and Attachments is Yahoo Mail’s most unique feature. But wouldn’t it still be noisy or disruptive if you still get notifications for everything?
Thankfully, you can personalise push notifications to keep track of only the emails that matter. Only want to be notified when an email from a real person comes in? There’s a toggle for that.
The Joy Bar is helpful (and may spark joy)
Another tentpole feature is the Joy Bar that sits along the bottom of the app. With a simple tap you can jump into different View sections to get to the content quickly. For instance, tap on the Attachments icon and you’ll be brought to the Attachments View that lists all your documents and photos.
The nice thing about the Joy Bar is that you can customise it. By default, it lets you quickly navigate to your starred messages, attachments and newsletters — but you easily swap any of the tabs with another View. For instance, if you travel a lot, you may want to swap one of the tabs with the Travel view to get to all your flight info quickly.
You can unsubscribe from unwanted emails with a tap
The Subscriptions View is easily my favourite feature in Yahoo Mail because it holds all the marketing emails I’ve intentionally (and unintentionally) signed up to, away from my already busy inbox.
Better yet, if I’ve read the promotion or newsletter and found it to be a waste of my time, I can just tap on a button to unsubscribe.
