What I tried at O.BBa BBQ & Jjajang

What makes the Amoy Street outlet unique is the fact that it entirely uses premium Korean charcoal in its grills. This speeds up the cooking time and ensures that the meat is extra juicy and flavourful.

The Korean BBQ portion of the menu is expansive, and features premium meats like prime beef and iberico pork. Compared to other Korean BBQ restaurants, the prices at O.BBa BBQ & Jjajang are relatively more affordable, with meat platters starting from just S$25.

The GgokSal (S$51) is one of the recommended meat dishes at O.BBa BBQ & Jjajang. This dish comes with 160g of prime beef.

Don’t expect to find dry steak here, for the GgokSal is incredibly juicy and tender. It is slightly chewy but not too tough, and each bite is a delight to savour.

The YangNyumGalbi (S$52) is another recommended beef dish on the menu. These prime beef short ribs are well-marinated in yang nyum sauce, making them a sweeter alternative to the GgokSal.

I can’t get enough of the delicious YangNyumGalbi. The marination seeps deep into the meat, such that the succulent beef is aromatic and sweet with a lovely charred fragrance.

Pork fans should definitely check out the premium pork cuts available at O.BBa BBQ & Jjajang. Satisfy your pork belly cravings with SaengSamGyupSal (S$28), which comes with a good ratio of fat to meat.

The juicy, soft fatty portions of the pork belly are balanced out nicely by the tender meat. The grilled surface of each chunk of meat is slightly crispy, adding to the textural contrasts of the dish.

Finally, treat yourself to the irresistible IBERICO HangJungSal (S$40), also known as iberico pork jowl. Compared to pork belly, this cut of meat has a higher fat content, making it even more juicy and indulgent.

The pork jowl is slightly chewier than the other meats, and is certainly the most succulent of the bunch because of its large amounts of fat. If you’re a huge fan of fatty meats, you won’t want to miss out on this dish.

O.BBa BBQ & Jjajang serves 7 kinds of banchan, including kimchi, edamame, mashed potatoes and seaweed to make your dining experience even more exciting. Aside from the usual lettuce wraps, have you ever wondered how else you can zhng up your BBQ meats?

One cool way is to wrap a piece of meat in daikon and seaweed, and top it with wasabi and dipping sauce. The crunchy daikon and light seaweed perfectly balance out the richness of the meat, making for a delectable treat.

If you’re not in the mood for Korean BBQ, not to worry, they also have a huge variety of ready-made Korean dishes! Their signature Jajangmyeon (S$13) is one of their most popular dishes— this dish comes with a huge portion of noodles and sauce at an incredibly affordable price.

You can also opt to add on toppings like a Sausage (S$2.50) and Frai (S$1), which is a fried egg. These options make your Jajangmyeon even more satisfying.

When mixed, the dark sauce beautifully coats every strand of noodle, making for a saucy and tantalising dish. The noodles are perfectly savoury and not too salty or sweet, while the succulent sausage is a great addition that pairs well with the silky noodles. I love how the fried egg comes with a runny centre too, making the dish even more creamy.

Another must-try dish is the Cheese HaeMulPaJeon (S$31), a seafood and spring onion pancake topped with cheese. This huge pancake comes with a dipping sauce and is perfect for sharing.

What I love most about this pancake is how it is crispy on the edges and thick in the middle, hence effectively catering to both preferences when it comes to Korean pancakes. Every bite of this pancake contains a liberal amount of mixed seafood, such as prawns and squid, and the layer of cheese on top is the perfect addition to amp up the savouriness of the dish.

The NalChiAlJuMeogBab (S$13) may sound pretty simple, but trust me when I say that you won’t regret getting it. This dish contains rice, flying fish roe, seaweed, a hard boiled egg and other ingredients, and will be rolled into cute, compact balls right in front of you. You can even try rolling the rice balls for yourself.

The resulting rice balls are packed full of flavour, with every ingredient coming together harmoniously to form an addictive yet wholesome snack. Pair these savoury balls with your grilled meats for that extra oomph.
