Nike DEI Chief Kizmet Mills Talks Importance of Support by Reciting Her Favorite Maya Angelou Quote: Women Who Rock

When asked if women do enough to support one another, Nike Inc. vice president and chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer Kizmet Mills quoted the late poet and activist Maya Angelou: “‘Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.’ I truly believe this,” Mills said. “Together, we lift one another up, whether it’s through celebrating accomplishments, having straight talk or simply just listening.”

Mills — a nine-year Nike Inc. veteran who assumed this role in November 2024 — attributed her supportive leadership ways to her mother’s influence. “As leaders, we are often required to make tough decisions or to have tough conversations. Having the courage of one’s convictions is important,” Mills said. “Another big thing she taught me is the importance of being compassionate, empathetic and kind. All of us can cultivate these attributes and strengths to help shape the mentorship we want to experience for ourselves.”

When it comes to future generations, Mills believes empowerment begins with giving young people a runway to learn. “I do what I can to create an environment that enables them to develop,” she said. “I’m a big believer in promoting a team environment where skills and different experiences are openly shared, embraced and celebrated. I believe in encouraging innovation through ideas — and even through failure.
