Red Velvet's evaluation for their debut [Interview]

"Every day is happy just like the title of our debut single goes."

On August 4th, one of Korea's biggest talent agency, SM Entertainment, debuted a new girl group named Red Velvet(Seul Gi, Irene, Wendy, Joy).

Red Velvet debuted with a digital single called 'Happiness,' and they earned a great number of fans at all over the world during last one month.

"I never expected to receive so much love from so many people. Every day is full of happiness, excitement, and surprises." (Seul Gi)

Red Velvet's debut single, 'Happiness,' is an Urban Euro Pop number with powerful synthesizer sounds and African tribal beats is an energetic urban euro pop dance song, co-produced by Will Simms, who also worked with EXO and Girls' Generation, and Chad Hugo.

Many fans were attracted by the four girls' lovely performance, and the girls debuted #1 on music charts even though they were newly debuted rookies.

Many people showed great reactions for the members' orange(Seul Gi), pink(Irene), blue(Wendy), and green(Joy) hair colors, and the hair colors largely helped the girls in building their own domain in abundance of idol groups in a relatively short time.

"The reason of our popularity? I think many people find us much more approachable than other idol groups. There are many other senior idol stars, but they have amazing charisma. However, we are short, and we still look like high school girls. I think many people think of us as younger sisters." (Wendy)

Red Velvet's Seul Gi had been exposed to the media even before her debut because Super Junoir's Kyu Hyun mentioned about her on MBC 'Golden Fishery - Radio Star.' However, Seul Gi told that she does not know Kyu Hyun in person.

"Kyu Hyun and I had a short meeting when I was in middle school, and I think he was referring to back then. I was a trainee when Kyu Hyun talked about me on 'Radio Star,' and I was very surprised. I thought that the girl that Kyu Hyun was talking about was not me, but it was me. Super Junior recently came back with a new album, and their performance look amazing. We will always cheer for them." (Seul Gi)


It has been a month since Red Velvet made their official debut, and the girls also made an evaluation of their debut.

"I never had any specific goal, and I just hoped that people would feel happy while watching our performance since our debut single's title is 'Happiness.' Many people are actually telling us that they feel happy while watching our performances, and it feels amazing." (Joy)

"We still have many improvements to make. We often monitor our own performances at our residence, and make comments about each other. To be honest, we still feel very awkward with looking at the cameras."

Seul Gi spent seven years as a trainee, and other members spent 3~4 years as trainees. The girls told that they have never been happier, and that every day feels like a dream. They could feel very pressured because SM Entertainment has cultivated so many top idol stars, such as TVXQ, Super Junior, SHINee, and EXO, but they told that they feel very well supported.

"I was never frustrated of long trainings. I just believed that a good time will come for me, and going through a series of troubles made me a better person. My family members also showed huge supports for me." (Seul Gi)

"I'd be lying if I say I have never felt pressured, but I feel very well supported thanks to them. They paved a nice road, and we should do our best in following, and continuing the road."

"We met chairman Lee Soo Man during a concert a while ago, and they told that he is enjoying watching our performances. He also told us to enjoy every single performance." (Wendy)

"When do I feel most proud of my debut? I think I feel the most proud of my debut when I see fans cheering for me. They chant our names when we perform, and they always give huge amount of energy to all of us." (Irene)


Red Velvet are going to continue promotion of 'Happiness' for a more while. They made a great number of big achievements during last one month, but they are going to keep running for a bit more.

"Our goal for the rest of the year? We hope to get some awards during year-end award ceremonies. However, that is not our ultimate goal, and we just hope to keep showing our 'happiness' to the public. There is one thing that I always wanted to say. I am feeling a profound gratitude to all of our fans for their amazing supports. I promise to show my best all the time." (Joy)

"We realize that many people do not know about Red Velvet as much, but we will keeps doing our best so that everybody know us. We promise to do our best." (Wendy)
