I recently bought the narrow-mouth water bottle and found that it's much easier to drink from.

With so many water bottles flooding the market (pun intended), let's take a look at this popular brand, Nalgene and find out why it's loved by users around the world. Nalgene first started out as a manufacturer of plastic bottles and containers for laboratory use. A chemist by the name of Emanuel Goldberg created the first plastic pipette jars in 1949, in New York, and the rest is history.

The American brand now has a vast catalog of plastic and even glass items like petri dish, test tubes and bottles. With different test conditions, Nalgene created high-quality plastic that's impact-resistant and light for every day use.

What is Nalgene water bottle made of?

Nalgene water bottles are made of a type of plastic called Tritan or Eastman Tritan copolyester and are BPA-free. Most one-time-use plastic drinking water bottles in the market are made of number 1 plastics (PET or PETE) which likely pose toxicity risks and can trap bacteria.

The company has now expanded their Sustain line, which is made from material derived from 50 per cent waste plastic (using ISCC certified mass balance), to help further offset the use of fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Can I pour hot water into Nalgene water bottles?

Yes you can. The bottles can stand high temperatures, even boiling water, without distorting their shape or function. But no one is asking you to heat the bottle over a bonfire, that will simply be a waste.

Which Nalgene water bottle is for me?

There are a few popular Nalgene water bottles in the market, namely the wide-mouth bottles and leak-proof, narrow-mouth ones.

If you like iced water, the wide-mouth bottles allow you to drop a few ice cubes and your water will be chilled in no time. However, I find the wide-mouth bottles tend to be a bit messy for me when I drink as I am slightly clumsy and tend to spill water over myself.

I recently bought the narrow-mouth water bottle and found that it's much easier to drink from.

I also happened to have a bottle with a straw and filtration system that's great for outdoors or camping but I wouldn't use it for everyday use as it is mildly annoying with the noise.

You could also buy add-ons that allow you different drinking functions without buying a whole new bottle.

All Nalgene bottles are said to be leakproof, and I can attest to this. Even with every shake and bumps in my backpack, no spillage occurred.

The bottles also come in different sizes: 16 oz (473ml), 20 oz (591ml) and 32 oz (roughly 946ml).

I try to drink 2 litres of water every day, so having a Nalgene water bottle on my table is a great and consistent reminder to do so.

Are Nalgene water bottles worth it? Here's what consumers say

A satisfied customer shared, "These things have seen it all and they don't crack or chip or anything. The one I bought brand new doesn't have any scratches at all."

Another shopper even carries it with her all the time: "The size is also perfect – it holds a lot of water but I can hold it in one hand without it being unwieldy and it fits in my purse."

One customer said there was no 'plastic' taste of water: "I had some hesitation going into the purchase as some water bottles have a distinct "plastic-ish" smell that affects the taste of the water in it. However, this bottle had none of that - the water tastes exactly as if I were drinking from a glass cup."
