Missing 'One Day'? Then Aimee Lou Wood's New Rom-Com Is A Must-See

Now that she’s graduated from Sex Education’s Moordale High, Aimee Lou Wood is onto the next big project, and this time it’ll include her making her screenwriting debut.

The BBC has commissioned the actress to write and star in Film Club, a new six-part romantic comedy about two friends who use their love of film to hint that they are madly in love with one another.

‘When Ralph [Davis] and I met a decade ago we knew pretty much instantly that we wanted to create something together and this feels deeply organic and idiosyncratic and right,’ Wood said in a statement, speaking of her co-writer, Life After Life’s Ralph Davis. ‘The BBC is the perfect home. Three of the most essential things to me have always been writing stories, watching films and acting so the fact I get to write a story ABOUT watching films AND act in it is beyond joyful.’

The news comes at the beginning of what is set to be a jam-packed year for the BAFTA-winning actor. Not only has it been announced that she’ll star in the third season of The White Lotus, but she’ll also star opposite I May Destroy You’s Paapa Essiedu in thriller Sweet Dreams, a crime film described as ‘the British Fargo’, which is due for release later this year.

So if you've got a One Day-shaped hole in your life, the will-they-won't-they love story at the heart of Film Club's one to look forward to. Here's everything we know so far about the series.

What will the plot of Film Club be?

Film Club, which the BBC has described as a 'piercingly funny and utterly heart-warming screenwriting debut from two of Britain’s most exciting voices', tells the story of Tom and Evie, who host weekly film clubs for each other.

'In reality, Tom is madly in love with Evie. What he doesn’t know is that Evie is in love with him too,' the official synopsis reads. 'But when Tom accepts a job at the other end of the country, their happily ever after comes under threat. He's leaving in six weeks. That means Evie has six film clubs left to tell Tom how she feels, or risk losing him forever.'

Who will star in Film Club?

Wood will take on the role of Evie in the series but further casting – including who will play Tom – has yet to be announced.

When will Film Club be available to watch?

Film Club has, sadly, just been announced which means that we shouldn't expect it to grace the small screen anytime soon. A 2025 release date seems the most likely, which means we've got quite a wait before we can lose ourselves in yet another simmering rom-com.
