Michelle Yeoh, who plays the infamous Eleanor Young in the Golden Globe nominated Crazy Rich Asians, just arrived on the red carpet donning jewels worthy of her impeccably-styled character.

Adapted from Kevin Kwan's epic trilogy, which lets readers into the scandalous, over-the-top glamorous lives of Asia's elite, Young's character in the film is most famous for her exquisite taste–and her distaste for her son Nick's new Chinese-American girlfriend, Rachel Chu, played by Globes Best Actress nominee, Constance Wu. When Nick, played by Henry Golding, decides to propose to Rachel in the film, he shows off a quaint, classic engagement ring to his best friend–but Yeoh's character is quick to put the kibosh on his plans to propose.

Spoiler alert (and if you haven't seen the film yet, we highly recommend it): the film ends with Nick getting his mother's blessing, and proposing to Rachel with a far more impressive ring–a stunning emerald ring flanked with diamonds that Yeoh's character wears earlier in the film, making it clear that Eleanor has finally given Nick her blessing to marry Rachel.

Both the scene in which Nick proposes and the ring were spontaneous decisions by the film's director, Jon M. Chu. Chu told New York Magazine that he re-wrote the scene the night before it was filmed, to include more movement and turn what he had originally scripted as a sweet moment into a less-than-perfect, super-romantic gesture. The ring, he explains, also underwent a last minute change-up.

According to Vulture, upon seeing the ring, Yeoh was less than impressed. "'We had a ring designed already, and our mock-up looked so shitty that Michelle [Yeoh] was like,That cannot be the ring I wear,” laughs Chu. “I’m like, I know, I know. I’m so embarrassed by it, but we don’t have the money.'" As a solution, Yeoh offered up her own ring to the production, the stunning emerald seen towards the end of the film, and on tonight's Golden Globes red carpet.

Yeoh, according to the LA Times, planned to wear the ring as soon as she got word that the film had been nominated, given its significance to the story. She paired the ring with a stunning diamond necklace and an aptly-toned bold green gown. Eleanor Young's strict, sharp personality may have little in common with Michelle Yeoh, but it appears that Yeoh's closet is just as fabulous as her character's.
