Meghan Markle Channeled Princess Diana in a Sleek Tuxedo Dress
Meghan Markle wore a chic black tuxedo dress, designed by Judith & Charles, to a gala performance of Hamilton in London Wednesday night. The event was set to benefit Sentebale, Prince Harry’s charity with Prince Seesio of Lesotho.
The Duchess of Sussex’s fashion choice echoed the style of her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Though the Princess of Wales didn't wear a black tuxedo dress like Meghan, she occasionally wore tuxedos or suit dresses to high-profile events.
In 1984, the year Prince Harry was born, Princess Diana wore a Margaret Howell tuxedo to a Genesis concert at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
The next year, in 1985, she wore a white skirt suit with a black bow tie while visiting Italy.
In 1986, she wore a Jasper Conran trouser suit with a white ruffled blouse and snake brooch on her lapel while meeting singer Bryan Adams in Vancouver.
Two years after that, in 1988, she wore a tuxedo with a green vest to a White City greyhound charity event at Wembley stadium.
In 1990, at the Royal Ascot horse races, Diana made a skirt suit statement with a pink and purple Catherine Walker outfit.
And in 1994, Diana wore a suit with elephant designs on the cuffs and tie to visit her brother Charles Althrop’s new baby at St. Mary’s Hospital in London.
Despite his mother's style influence, Prince Harry may not be the biggest tuxedo fan himself. The Daily Mail reported in July that Harry nixed the idea of Meghan wearing tuxedos on their upcoming trip to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Tonga. He reportedly didn’t want Meghan to wear “a masculine Stella McCartney tuxedo suit” to an important event.
If the report is true, perhaps this tuxedo dress is a stylish compromise for the royal couple. After all, she did rise to fame thanks to a show called Suits.
