Mee Bagus: Halal volcano ramen & kecap manis mee pok loaded with lava eggs, abalone squid & meatballs

Mee pok stalls are a common sight around Singapore, but have you ever had halal-certified mee pok before? Not only is Mee Bagus halal-certified, it also offers some truly unique noodle dishes with ingredients and flavours that you may not commonly see in traditional stalls.

Mee Bagus can be found within the Kedai Kopi coffeeshop in Yishun, conveniently located right opposite Northpoint City. The stall’s menu consists of various kinds of noodle dishes, including mee pok, laksa, fishball noodles and even a ramen-style dish!

Each dish was served within an ornate patterned bowl, making them look like restaurant-quality creations.

What I tried at Mee Bagus

One of the signature dishes on the menu was the Mee Bagus Special (S$7.30), a hefty bowl of mee pok topped with abalone squid, chicken slices, fishballs, ayam meatballs, mushrooms, chicken skin oil and half of a soy lava egg.

I tossed the noodles together to allow for the sauce to coat the noodle strands. The sauce was savoury with a relatively spicy kick to it. It was a bit on the saltier side and tasted like your average mee pok, in all honesty, but it served its purpose in satisfying my noodle cravings.

I loved the large variety of toppings in the noodles— each element helped in zhng-ing up the dish effectively. The soft mushrooms were juicy and slightly sweet while the chicken slices were chewy and acted as a nice source of protein. I loved the bouncy fishballs and the peppery chicken meatballs too, which were surprisingly tender.

Though the price was quite steep in comparison to other mee pok dishes, the generous amount of toppings surely justified it.

I was intrigued by the Mee Ayam (S$4.80) at Mee Bagus when I realised that it contained kecap manis and sambal tumis— I had never tried mee pok with this kind of sauce.

The dish came topped with sliced mushrooms, sliced chicken, minced chicken meat and chicken meatballs.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this dish! The kecap manis and sambal tumis was a beautiful combination, as the sweetness of the kecap manis was nicely balanced by the saltier and spicier profile of the sambal. As someone who enjoys a bit of sweetness in my savoury dishes, I found this to be more flavourful and more exciting than the Mee Bagus Special.

There was a pretty adequate amount of sliced chicken within the dish too. Though the chicken was a tad on the drier side, it was still satisfying and gave the noodles some variation in texture.

For just S$4.80, this dish was a steal, and I’d certainly have it again.

Finally, I opted to try the Volcano Ayam (S$7.30)— this dish consisted of ramen-styled mee kia served with special volcano sambal. The noodles were served in a milky white broth with a dollop of sambal on the side. When I mixed it up thoroughly, the broth adopted a bright scarlet hue as the sambal was well-dispersed.

I could not get enough of the Volcano Ayam— the mee kia was soft and slightly bouncy, soaking up the spicy broth nicely. The broth was definitely the stand-out element of the dish as it was perfectly milky and creamy with a good amount of spice to elevate it.

I found that the Volcano Ayam became a tad jelak after a while due to the richness of the milky broth, but for the most part, it was very filling and incredibly tasty. It definitely reminded me of actual ramen and I’d love to have it again.

Final thoughts

Mee Bagus is certainly one of the more creative mee pok stalls I’ve encountered, and the fact that it is halal-certified makes it even better, given how Muslim friends are able to enjoy it too. Though the prices are a bit higher, I commend the stall for its generous amount of toppings and hearty portions.

I know I’ll definitely be back to enjoy these delicious noodle dishes again!

Expected damage: S$4.50 – S$7.30 per pax
