Louisa Mak pens heartwarming note to 17-year-old self

12 Jun – Accepting the #dear17 challenge posed by education consultant Samuel Chan, Louisa Mak recently penned a long message to her 17-year-old self to express her thoughts about the decision she made when she was still a teenager.

As reported on Mingpao, in her the letter which she posted on Facebook, Louisa mentioned how she was considered lucky by many to be able to earn her way into Hong Kong University after getting straight As in her HKCEE (equivalent to British GCSE), but decided to go to Cambridge instead of taking the more convenient choice.

"Let me tell you as your future self that people never know what is best for them. You must stumble on the way to chase a dream. Believe me, don't be afraid to try. Take the step bravely. Who can ensure that every choice in life is correct? There is no absolute right or wrong in the world. Just know that success comes from little beyond a day. You can't surpass everybody, but you can continue to surpass yourself," she wrote.

She also thanked her 17-year-old self for her decision to study in the United Kingdom and adapting to a completely unfamiliar learning environment and experiencing another public test without fear of difficulty.

"In retrospect, when I entered boarding school, I learned about British culture, and learned to live alone, I also made a lot of jokes, and there were laughs and tears in the process. You will re-experience the pleasure of pursuing knowledge, grow curios about things in different fields, and shape your future self-worth and outlook on life."

She also spoke about failure in love, writing that falling in love is not easy, and so is getting along with someone.

"To understand that you can't know if each relationship can bear fruit, you should think of it as a journey to make yourself stronger, know yourself, and understand human nature. You may experience the pain of being betrayed and hurt, but please don't be unwilling or complain about each other. Treating others well is treating yourself well. Dare to love, dare to try, dare to admit your weakness, this is growth. The ultimate goal of love is to learn to love, don't be afraid to lose and not give up, because love does not necessarily have to own, but to own a person one must love him and cherish him!"
