Liza Soberano files criminal case over rape remark
28 Sep – Liza Soberano has filed a criminal case against a netizen who recently made a rape comment about her.
As reported on ABS-CBN, the actress was recently spotted taking her oath before Deputy City Prosecutor Irene Ressureccion on 24 September, accompanied by her manager Ogie Diaz and legal representative, Atty. Jun Lim.
Speaking about the issue, Soberano, who was reminded by her fans not to let the issue slide, stated that the rape remark was made under a thread of comments of another person's post, but that it was upsetting enough for her to take action.
"It went something like I don't seem to have a job anymore, and I can do anything I want no matter that my image will be damaged. And then something about how it would be nice if I was raped," she said.
The worse part of that, said Soberano, was the fact that the commenter was a woman.
"I think it is about time that people learn the consequences of speaking like that on social media. I know that everybody is entitled to their own opinion, that is true, but at some point you have to be respectful to others online. I want people to learn that there are consequences to everything, like rape jokes, because that is not a light matter," she said.
On the other hand, Atty. Lim stated that the rape remark is a clear violation of Section 4(c)(4) of Republic Act. No. 10175, otherwise known as "Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012," in relation to Article 355 of the Revised Penal Code.
