History, Culture and Technology Unite in Dingyun Zhang's FW24 Collection

At first glance, Dingyun Zhang's debut Fall/Winter 2024 collection looks utilitarian and futuristic. However, dig a little deeper, and the Mongolian-Chinese designer's heritage is weaved throughout the collection, informing the functionality and design of each piece.

For example, the Quilted Volume Jacket and Reflex Cocoon Jacket are derived from the ancient Terlig coat, worn by Mongolian men to protect themselves from the cold. The centerpiece print of the collection, Oracle Camo, incorporates the Chinese character "Ding鼎" into a camoflauge motif, available in "Industrial Green" and "Midnight Purple."

"We wish to translate an ancient civilization, discontinued and mystified from antiquity," says Dingyun Zhang in a public statement. Zhang builds on this goal by also including other cultures, groups and innovations within the collection. Traces of Inuit design, ice fishing technology, and colours common to U.S. Navy uniforms appear across pieces.
