Floss buns are a common sight in bakeries all over Singapore, but have you ever had massive floss breads the size of a large plate? Hao Bang General Wholesales Trading is an old-school bakery in Yishun known for its enormous floss buns that could feed a whole family!

Don’t be fooled by its industrial sounding name— Hao Bang General Wholesales Trading is indeed a bakery. The famous huge floss breads are displayed right outside the store, and come with an assortment of fillings, including ham, cheese, chicken bakkwa, tuna and egg. Depending on which fillings you pick, the giant floss breads cost from S$5.80 to S$15 per piece.

Aside from the floss bread, you can also get an assortment of old-school cakes, tarts and breads at affordable prices.

What I tried at Hao Bao General Wholesales Trading

With 15 kinds of floss bread for sale, I wasn’t sure of what to pick. Hence, I decided to go all out and purchase the most expensive BBQ Chicken + Ham + Cheese + Egg version, priced at S$15. This gargantuan bun was delightfully hefty!

Removing a slice revealed the layers within— the egg was unfortunately extremely thin and barely visible. I would have liked if the bakery was a little more generous in that aspect.

The bread itself was very soft and pillowy, while the various ingredients within came together harmoniously— the chicken bakkwa was chewy and sweet while the cheese had a savoury, slightly salty flavour. They naturally paired well with the tender ham and the egg. The chicken floss on top tied the whole dish together with its mild sweetness and fluffy texture.

Though S$15 is a little steep, this floss bread did not disappoint in taste, and each slice was surprisingly filling too.

Next, I decided to try an old-school Walnut Butter Cake (S$4), which came scattered with bits of chopped walnuts.

The cake had a dense yet fluffy texture. A very strong, buttery aroma filled my mouth with each bite I took, complemented by the crunchy and nutty walnut pieces. The cake as a whole was not too sweet, though I’d recommend cutting smaller pieces, due to how rich and possibly jelak it can get. Hao Bang General Wholesales Trading definitely delivered in providing a delicious yet affordable butter cake.

I got my hands on a box of assorted tarts for S$4— this box contained a Chocolate Tart and a Mixed Nut Tart.

The Mixed Nut Tart came topped with an assortment of candied nuts and dried fruit. This was a classic treat that I thoroughly enjoyed— the sweet and chewy fruits complemented the crunchy nuts nicely, and the tart base was crunchy and buttery, effectively satisfying my nutty cravings.

The Chocolate Tart was pretty simple and nostalgic too, with a slightly oozy chocolate filling encased within the same buttery crust. Chocolate aficionados may not be too impressed with this creation as the fillings had the same cheap, slightly cloying taste of chocolate coins. However, if you’re just in search of a simple and old-school dessert to munch on, you’d probably be content with this.

Finally, I tried the Chicken Char Siew Shao Bao (S$1.50 for 1 piece, S$4.50 for 3 pieces). The char siew filling within was surprisingly much saucier and more liquid-y than other shao baos I’ve had. I liked that the filling managed to strike a good balance of sweet and savoury flavours. The ratio of pastry to filling was perfect too— each bite contained a good amount of crumbly pastry and sweet char siew.

Hao Bang General Wholesales Trading offers some pretty solid old-school bakes that will definitely satisfy you and your loved ones. Each item was affordably priced and of decent quality. If you can only get one item, the giant floss buns are a must-try, though if you’re in the market for some cakes instead, I’d recommend trying the butter cakes, too.

Do give this bakery a visit if you’re ever in the Yishun area— the variety of bakes is very commendable, and will certainly satisfy you and your loved ones.
