Founder of Mount Faber Nasi Lemak passes away at 85; son takes over business
This week brought us sorrowful news as we learned about the passing of Madam Koh Ah Kim, the founder of Mount Faber Nasi Lemak. She passed away due to kidney failure and peacefully departed on 13 Oct 2023 at the age of 85, as reported by Shin Min Daily News.
Madam Koh’s elder daughter, Lin Qian Ru, revealed that her mother had been battling kidney disease for the past 4 years, with 3 hospitalisations in 2019, 2021, and the current year. Additionally, Madam Koh experienced a mild stroke in 2016.
Mount Faber Nasi Lemak is a renowned establishment among Singaporean food enthusiasts, having operated for over 5 decades. One of our colleagues, has been a loyal customer of this modest eatery since his army days.
Madam Koh’s son will now be taking the reins of the business, which relocated from Kreta Ayer to Sago Street last year.
For those unfamiliar with the history, Mount Faber Nasi Lemak was established in 1975 by Madam Koh’s husband, who ventured into the culinary world when his office equipment business faced difficulties. Madam Koh acquired the art of crafting nasi lemak from her husband’s cousin, who was a Nyonya.
The couple transformed the garage of a black-and-white bungalow at Mount Faber into their kitchen, where all the culinary magic unfolded. It was here that the eatery derived its name. Madam Koh took charge of the cooking, while her husband delivered the delectable dishes to their customers.
Among the restaurant’s offerings, the Nasi Lemak with Chicken Drumstick stands as their signature dish. Many patrons favour Set B (S$4.30), which includes Nasi Lemak with Chicken Drumstick, vegetables, egg, ikan bilis, peanuts, and lime juice.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Madam Koh’s grieving family. May she find eternal peace.
