Enjoy yuzu pork and A4/A5 Wagyu cutlets at newly opened Tonkatsu ENbiton in VivoCity

Tonkatsu ENbiton is EN Group’s latest addition, and you can find it located amongst the food and beverage stretch in Basement 2 of VivoCity.

Specialising in “yuzu pork” katsu sets, Tonkatsu ENbiton offers a series of deep-fried pork cutlets in 2 types of cuts and 3 different flavours.

Japanese pigs bred at Kagoshima prefecture had yuzu fruits contained in their feed, hence attaining its name “yuzu pork”. Those who prefer a lean cut of pork would enjoy the Hire fillet while the Rosu fillet includes a strip of juicy fat.

Every piece is coated evenly with Japanese panko, and then deep-fried for a few minutes before resting the meat for up to two minutes. A satisfying crunch sound was heard at each bite and I was surprised that the meat retained its juiciness well.

During my visit, I tried the yuzu Rosu fillet in 3 variations — Original, Oroshi and Miso. Get the original Yuzu Pork Katsu Set (S$22) to savour the quality of this unique meat. Expect a robust pork flavour and juiciness alongside fatty bits layered within the cutlet.

A tangy and almost refreshing flavour was obtained in the Oroshi Yuzu Rosu Katsu Set (S$24) which came with grated daikon seated atop the meat and ponzu sauce on the side. I appreciate how the panko crust did not turn soggy even after leaving the dish aside for a while. 

The Miso Yuzu Rosu Katsu Set (S$24) was presented with a thick glaze of miso reduction. The dish was mostly savoury with a hint of sweetness.

I also tried the Gyukatsu Wagyu (a type of beef from Miyazaki, Japan, in A4/A5 grade) in 2 selections — Miyazaki Gyukatsu (S$39) and Miyazaki Wagyu Katsu Sando (S$37)

With the first option, a hot stone makes a dramatic entrance to the table and I was informed that we could further cook the beef to the doneness that I preferred. Families dining with children should be wary of the flickering flame.

Taste wise, the Miyazaki beef sustained a bold beefy flavour with a melt-in-your-mouth texture in both the tonkatsu set and sandwich. However, there were some bits that required more chewing before it could be swallowed.

The last item I attempted was the eye-opening Seafood Charcoal Black Curry Set (S$27). While the assortment of seafood — scallop, Japanese oyster, salmon and prawn — were large and perfectly fried to golden brown, the black curry tasted like any other Japanese curry. I would recommend you to select the pork or beef tonkatsu sets for a bang of your buck. 

Do note that each katsu set comes with free-flow Japanese white rice, free-flow cabbage and arugula, pickles and a bowl of Tonjiru (pork and vegetable soup seasoned with miso). With that, I am certain that you will leave the restaurant satisfied and happy with your purchase!
