Coco Lee passed away at 48

6 Jul – Coco Lee was revealed to have passed away.

The news was announced by her family members on 5 July, with her sister revealing that the singer had been battling depression in recent years before deciding to end her life on 2 July at her residence.

Though she was rushed to the hospital, Coco passed away on 5 July at the Queen Mary Hospital.

The family also stated that Coco had been trying her best to fight depression throughout the years, with the help of professionals.

"CoCo is known to have worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and she went all out to shine for the Chinese. We are proud of her!" said sister Nancy.

"As a family of CoCo, we are very grateful and honoured to have such an excellent and outstanding sister. We are grateful to God for giving us such a kind angel. We hope that now she has gone to a happier place and no longer suffers from depression; believe that God definitely give her the best arrangement! Now, our greatest responsibility is to take good care of our elderly mother. I hope everyone will pray for us and give us the space and time to heal the pain!"

This year should have marked the 30th anniversary of her career. Coco made her debut in the early 90s and had released over 15 albums. She even broke into the US Billboard charts through her song, "Do You Want My Love" in 1999.

She went on to compete in the fourth season of the Chinese reality show "I Am A Singer" and won the competition.

She was 48.
