Basements might have plenty of potential—these subterranean spaces can double as a home office, play area, or tricked-out bowling alley—but they're typically not thought of as the most aesthetically pleasing room of the house. As if the wall-to-wall carpet and minimal natural light weren't enough to give you the ick, just look up because it's very likely your basement has a not-so-stylish ceiling popcorn or drop ceiling.
Fortunately, Kelsi Clem of Cedar Hill Builder found the perfect solution for dressing up an otherwise ugly basement ceiling: Swap out your basic panels for some well-appointed tiles. In her TikTok that highlights the transformation, Clem selected ceiling tiles from Ceilume, which “added height without having to demo this drop down.”
Of course, this easy DIY project does have a few watch-outs. Not only did she have to cut some ceiling tiles to accommodate her basement's can lights, but she also added Ceilume's grid covers to create a clean, cohesive look. “None of this is hard work, but it is a good workout for your shoulders,” she adds.
Once she finished those tweaks, she had truly transformed the space. “These ceilings are absolutely beautiful and it made this basement feel so elegant,” Clem says. As you might expect, Clem isn't the only one who was impressed with the results: The comments section is packed with praise. “I never would have guessed that was a drop ceiling,” one person wrote. “Such an awesome idea!!” “Whoever designed those ceiling tiles is a genius,” commented another. “They look so high-end.” A third simply wrote, “First time I’ve never hated a drop ceiling.”
An easy, affordable project with jaw-dropping results? It's only natural that you would want to bring this look to your basement ceiling. To help, we hand-picked a few pretty tiles, including a similar style to the ones Clem used.
