I'm a product of cold weather. Born in Boston, raised in Chicago, schooled in Rhode Island, and currently living in New York, my East Coast and Midwestern roots have made me live through some tundra-like conditions. So take it from me: investing in a warm parka is worth it. Temperatures will drop below freezing, and this is the one piece of clothing you don't want to skimp on. In that vein, the Expedition Parka is truly one of the best that money can buy. Here's why.

It's a perfect parka.

I have to talk about how good this coat is at keeping you warm. Sure, it's what a parka is supposed to do, but this one does it better than anything I have ever used. Just last winter it was something like –25 degrees (with windchill) in Chicago, and we had two dogs we needed to walk. This coat was passed around amongst my mom, sister, and I as we each took turns taking the pups out, because no one wanted to leave the house without it. Canada Goose advertises this coat as being able to go down to –22 degrees and below, and it truly did stand up to that claim. We didn't even need to go crazy with layers underneath it. This is performance at its highest level.

The parka also lives up to its hype (and price) for more than just its warmth. Thoughtful details in the construction set this coat apart from other fashion parkas you pay an arm and a leg for. An adjustable down-filled hood helps to trap more body heat and serves as extra protection against the elements. The chin guard is lined with a soft fabric for comfort, and rib-knit cuffs prevent warmth from escaping. Built-in backpack straps allow you to carry this jacket hands-free over your shoulders, and the waist has an adjustable drawcord so you can tailor the fit. And this is all before even mentioning the six exterior pockets and three interior pockets. Yeah, the Expedition has got it going on.

Though, I have some notes.

There are some things to consider before you go ahead and buy this coat—namely, heft and versatility. The coat is designed to be oversized. But with the wide hood, heavy weight, and length, it can feel a little bulky at times. While the bulk is key to the jacket's overall warmth, it definitely is something to consider if are looking for something more lightweight and streamlined. This is not a jacket that's optimized in that way. A silver lining of that is this isn't just a piece of functional outerwear. It's got those heavy touches to class it up a bit. Say you want a coat that you can wear out to a fancy dinner but will keep you temperate on the way there, you might be better off with a peacoat. But no peacoat is keeping getting you through the negative temps like this bad boy. Even if it's a less professional look, it's not a Mount Everest look. It's got feet in both camps.

So, should you invest?

Yes. Bottom line, a good winter coat is an investment that all cold weather denizens should make. If you're a buy-for-life person or just want the highest quality out there, a Canada Goose Expedition Parka will last you for decades, literally. I've had this jacket for years, and it's still in perfect condition. Between the durability, the warmth, and the features, it's hard to dispute the quality and utility of this style.
