The Little Epicurean, also known as Maryanne Cabrera, is back again with spine-tingling black and orange dessert just in time for Halloween. You may recall her delicious Peanut Butter Chocolate Bundt Cake from before in our Cake of the Day series. This time she shares with us a cake that’s simply electric! We first spotted it on Instagram and learned that the cake is baked with black sesame and covered in a web of orange marshmallows. If you’ve ever wondered what black sesame tastes like, Cabrera goes into delicious details about what to expect.

“If you’ve never had black sesame desserts, it tastes quite similar to peanuts. It’s very toasty and nutty in flavor,” she describes. “The cake isn’t that sweet, neither is the frosting. The sugary marshmallows really help to balance out the flavors in this cake.”

To create the natural black color of the frosting and batter, Cabrera makes her own black sesame paste by food processing together black sesame seeds with honey and corn syrup. She then bakes three black layers of cake, and in between each tier, she spreads a thick covering of sesame cream cheese frosting. She then gently drapes bright strands of orange marshmallow over the top and sides. The finished product is a gorgeous eye-popping dessert with a unique sesame flavor that’s anything but your typical Halloween cake. Learn how to make your own spider webbed dessert and swing by The Little Epicurean for the recipe.
