British Artist Gary Hume Lists 19th-Century Hudson Valley Home For $4.25 Million

Married British artists and husband-and-wife duo, abstract sculptor and painter Gary Hume and multimedia artist Georgie Hopton, relocated from London to New York in the early 2000s and found refuge and inspiration on a bucolic farm in Upstate New York.

The Hudson Valley has long been a creative haven for artists, offering easy proximity to the city along with the joys and solitude of country life. Hume and Hopton were drawn to the area after a visit to the home of fellow British artist and good friend Nicola Tyson, who had a home in the town of New Paltz. It wasn’t long before Hume and Hopton purchased a fixer-upper property in nearby Accord and embarked on one of their most important projects to date. Now, they are listing their well-loved creative compound for $4.25 million to spend more time in London.

The 41.5-acre property, a former chicken farm, is surrounded by mature gardens, rolling meadows, historic orchards, and tranquil ponds. Lovingly transformed by the couple into an epic creative compound, the property now features a couple of homes and studios embued with the artists’ unique, colorful style. The 2,300-square-foot main house has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a powder room, while a hand-hewn farmhouse that dates to 1860 exudes historical flair with thoughtful, modern updates.

“There’s something very magical about this property that the sellers felt was right at the beginning,” says listing agent Megan Brenn-White of the Upstate Curious Team at Compass. “You drive down from the country road to where the 19th-century farmstead is tucked into a little valley, with rolling meadows surrounded by woods. It is then so evident that two prolific artists made their stamp on the property, building or renovating spaces to create. All of the buildings still have potential to become spaces to write, create, work, and gather. The compound itself is its own creative project.”

Each room has a distinct artist’s touch. You enter the home and are greeted by the parlor room, with beautiful custom hand-painted wallpaper and exposed wooden ceiling beams. The heart of the home is the great room, which includes an open-plan kitchen plus living and dining areas and features soaring ceilings and large windows that let in plenty of natural light.

The kitchen is equipped with top-of-the-line Miele appliances and copper and marble countertops, while the adjoining living area is anchored by one of the home’s three fireplaces. There’s also a screened-in porch with a stone fireplace and a bluestone patio, ideal for outdoor dining during the warm summer months. Each of the three bedrooms is full of charm and color; the primary bathroom presents a dose of whimsy with a colorful tiled shower and freestanding tub.

Hume and Hopton’s separate studios are highlights of the property. “Gary’s Studio” studio measures 4,500 square feet and was built in 2016 with a farmstead-meets-contemporary exterior with weathered Corten steel and concrete. There are 25-foot-high vaulted ceilings, massive skylights, art storage space, and integrated heating and cooling systems. The studio has a private walkway via wooden stairs as well as a private driveway separate from the main house.

Meanwhile, “Georgie’s Studio” is both intimate and bright. The high-ceilinged space features skylights, work benches, and a kitchenette. There’s another structure known as the “Little Studio,” with an additional bedroom and bathroom, a sitting room, and a studio space. There is also a former chicken coop that now hosts a cedar sauna.

“The sellers are ready for a new adventure,” Brenn-White says. “They’ve spent two decades living between Accord and London, working on and in this property—the buildings and the land—and are thinking of starting fresh with a country home a little closer to family and friends in London.”
