Am I Addicted: Vegetarian Korean cafe with Instagrammable food doubles up as a pottery studio

When it comes to vegan and vegetarian food, one dish may come to mind: salad, salad, and more salad. As a lifelong meat eater, I’ll admit that I used to think the same. However, Am I Addicted is a cafe that caught my attention for having a whole slew of non-salad vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Located within Capitol in City Hall, Am I Addicted is a vegetarian and vegan Korean cafe that doubles as a pottery studio. All their dishes are meat-free, with a multitude of entirely plant-based vegan options.

As someone who doesn’t eat vegan food often, I was excited to be able to try vegan food like never before. I was also accompanied by my vegan friend, so as to gather a more unbiased view of the food.

What I tried at Am I Addicted

The first dish we tried was the Doenjang Truffle Risotto (S$25), containing doenjang (Korean miso), truffle oil, dashi stock and mixed mushrooms. Most interestingly, the Doenjang Truffle Risotto was made with barley instead of rice, unlike traditional risotto

The Doenjang Truffle Risotto came with the option of having a sous vide egg, cheese, garlic and onion, but I opted not to have them to get the full vegan experience.

The barley was chewy and the fragrance of the truffle oil was evident with each mouthful. I could taste the salty, umami doenjang and dashi stock, and the mushrooms were generous and soft. The entire dish was packed full of flavour, and I was very pleasantly surprised!

The vegan cheese sprinkled on top of the Doenjang Truffle Risotto did not have the same creamy, melty mouthfeel or rich flavour as compared to real cheese, but it added a bit of texture and saltiness to the dish.

While I would not call this dish a risotto due to it lacking the same creaminess that regular risotto would have, I found it to be absolutely delicious and bursting with flavour.

Next, we had the Grilled Cheese Kimchi Sandwich (S$16), consisting of bread sandwiching kimchi and vegan cheese with a side of garden salad.

The sandwich was generously filled with ingredients, while the salad was drizzled with a sesame sauce.

The kimchi within the sandwich was salty and flavourful, with the kimchi sauce nicely coating the surface of the bread. I found the vegan cheese to be rather underwhelming in comparison to real cheese, as texture-wise, it was slightly rubbery and did not have the same melty, gooey quality as real cheese. The vegan cheese did not add much flavour or dimension to the sandwich, and I felt that the Grilled Cheese Kimchi Sandwich would have been better complemented with other vegetable fillings.

The salad was incredibly fresh and crisp, and I found it to be refreshing and delicious.

Generally I wasn’t incredibly impressed with the Grilled Cheese Kimchi Sandwich, but my dining companion enjoyed this dish more out of the two that we tried. However, I still found the addition of kimchi inside a sandwich to be inventive and creative, and it was still a satisfying dish nonetheless.

I normally don’t pay much attention to the drinks served in restaurants and cafes as my focus is usually on the main dishes, but Am I Addicted’s drinks looked too visually appealing to ignore. We first got the Strawberry Chung Ade (S$6.90). For the uninitiated, chung is a kind of preserved puree made using fruits and sugar, and the Strawberry Chung Ade came with strawberry chung and soda.

The soda was fizzy and very refreshing, with the strawberry chung tasting natural and not too sweet. My dining companion and I both loved this drink, and the addition of fresh strawberries made it all the more delicious.

The Strawberry Chung Milk (S$7.90), on the other hand, came with a beautiful dark chocolate rim around it. Like the Strawberry Chung Ade, the strawberry chung tasted natural and sweet, bringing out the fragrance of the oat milk.

I fell in love with this drink, and I would most certainly get it again in the future!

Final thoughts

To many meat eaters, vegan and vegetarian food may not sound very appealing, especially with many having the misconception that vegans and vegetarians only eat salads. Am I Addicted impressed me with their vegan dishes, and as a meat eater, I could definitely envision myself having these dishes everyday.

Am I Addicted provides delicious and wholesome vegan and vegetarian dishes that can be enjoyed by both meat eaters and non-meat eaters. Even as I’m writing this review, I’m starting to crave some Doenjang Truffle Risotto and Strawberry Chung Milk. Oh no, am I addicted?

Expected damage: S$16 – S$35 per pax
