6 Singapore artisanal doughnut shops that offer delivery

If there’s one food trend that has yet to see any semblance of wavering, it would be doughnuts. And we’re not talking old-school bakery type of doughnuts. Here, I’m making judicious reference to artisanal dougnuts—the kind you’re usually motivated to serve with your good China, TWG Tea, and a touch of pinky finger sniffing the air as you take a sip.

Here, I’ve compiled a list of six artisanal doughnut boutiques that promises a world of fun with fillings that range from run-of-the-mill to impressively unique. With this many options to choose from, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a favourite, though who’s stopping anyone from having six favourites. Choices? Pfft. We don’t know her.

Top on the list is Sourbombe Artisanal Bakery, the brainchild of Genevieve Lee, runner-up of MasterChef Singapore 2018. Here, Gen peddles sweet treats inspired by Italian Bombolini and her love for all things sourdough. The result? A round of fluffy and artisanal Sourbombe piped with unique flavours that burst enthusiastically upon bite.

Currently, the retail outfit of the bakery is still wrapped in hoarding, though Gen says it will be opened this month. Its fame, though, precedes its reputation with various popups and collaborations held to spread the gospel of all things Sourbombe.

When it opens, be sure to queue 1 metre apart for their Sourbombe Set (S$44.00) that comes with nine flavours to feed your inner dessert glutton. Some of the flavours on offer include the Basque Burnt Cheesecake (SS5.60), Peanut Butter and Jam (S$5.60) and the curious pairing of Thai Tea and Mango (S$4.80).

Burnt Ends Bakery

When the mecca of all things smoked meats announces that they're now offering baked goods on the side, one best perk up and pay due attention. As evident by the unending praises showered by my food friends all over Instagram (at least for those lucky or worthy of snagging a bite of these elusive bakes), the doughnuts at Burnt Ends Bakery clearly have won over adoring fans.

The flavours on offer are nothing too crazy or left-wing to speak of, though that in no way detracts from their fabulousness. The Pandan Doughnuts (S$24 for 6, S$52 for 12) are filled with pandan cream and topped with coconut glaze. Elsewhere, the crowd favourite, Nutella Doughnuts (S$24 for 6, S$52 for 12), threaten to arrest the attention of this clamouring for familiar flavours while the Vanilla Cream (S$24 for 6, S$52 for 12) promises an, ahem, vanilla approach to these fluffy Brioche-based bakes.

Otherwise, you can simply get a Mix box of 5 assorted doughnuts (S$20) and have at it while camped in front of the computer, waiting for PM Lee's Phase 3 announcement.

Flake Cronuts

Cronuts are what happens when you mix the classic French croissant with the American doughnut to create a product that's equal parts flaky and beautifully fluffy all at once. How flaky, you ask? Well, at Flake, the dough is folded 27 times for the best crunch before being fried and then piped by hand.

Diners with a sweet tooth will appreciate this deviation from the norm. I'm confident that upon the first bite, you'll wonder what heavenly pleasures have befallen you. It's nothing mystical, henny; it’s just Cronuts. Choose from a Box of 6 Assorted Cronuts (S$32) with flavours like Tiramisu, Hojicha, Cinnamon Sugar, Creme Caramel Custard, Blueberry Compote, and Hazelnutella because choosing is so 2020.

The Fat Kid Bakery

The self-professed fat kid in question here is Ariel Tang; a baker turned PR consultant turned baker, back to doing what she loves—satisfying the tummies and spirits of people around her through her Sourdough Bombos. Like all great home-based business stories, Ariel's Sourdough Bombos experienced the sweet taste of success during Circuit Breaker last year.

Her Bombos go through a long fermentation process of 72 hours for optimal flavour development and a tall soft crumb. It is available in boxes of Box of 4 (S$14), Box of 8 (S$28), Box of 10 (S$35), and a Box of 12 (S$42) featuring flavours such as Chocolate, Oolong, Mango, and Blueberry Cheesecake. I insist you try the Roasted Oolong Milk Tea (S$5/piece) made with Oolong tea pan-roasted and infused in a milk custard for a unique filling that's incredibly toothsome.
