SG Phase 2 Heightened Alert: 12 restaurants that deliver a touch of luxe to your doorstep

So the week is finally over, and you’ve had enough of sitting by the computer, staring at your screen all day, attending yet another Zoom meeting. For a while, we mistakenly thought that the days of sitting through online meeting after online meeting is long over, yet here we are again.

As we wait with breath that is bated for Phase 2 Heightened Alert to move back to Phase 3, perhaps a little touch of luxury dining delivered to your doorstep might be just the thing we need to lift our moods. Here, I’ve compiled 12 restaurants that can help give a fresh breath of luxe to a weekend of dining at home.

Ren Lounge

Located next to JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach, the concept comprises several distinct spaces, starting from the lounge for bar snacks and extensive selection of drinks; island centrepiece kitchen of counter seats for omakase dining; and a private room for more space and privacy. Perfect for dining-in should restrictions be lifted later.

Lunch menus range from S$80 for the 12-piece Tsuki set, to S$100 and S$180 for Omakase. Dinner menus range from S$150 for the 15-piece Sushi Edomae set, to S$180, S$250 and S$350 for the signature Omakase.

Helming the menu is Chef Samuel Lau, who delivers his signature flair in Japanese cuisine with seven years of hard-won experience at Japanese restaurants, most recently as sushi chef at Shinji by Kanesawa (St Regis).

Birds of a Feather

Too often, diners associate mala with the Xiang Guo iteration—a comically huge bowl filled with vegetables and meats of your choice, topped with crunchy roasted peanuts. Enter Chef Eugene See from Birds of A Feather, who says that he wants to “challenge the public’s perception of Sichuan food, and capture the many depths of this beloved cuisine through the lens of refined contemporary Western fare.”

To say that the delivery menu Chef Eugene has created is expansive would be an understatement. With selections across categories of Signatures, Mains, Snacks & Salads, and Desserts, surely there will be something for everyone here, whether it’s for a celebratory meal with the family or a simple lunch for two. What I’d recommend, though, are the Birds Bundles that are extremely value-for-money while succinctly representing the culinary philosophy of Birds of a Feather.

The Birds Bundle A: Signature Couple Set (S$68.00) comes with fried chicken in dried chillis, spicy oriental bolognese, tender chicken grain bowls, two cups of bird's boba brown sugar milk, and a slice of cheesecake.

There’s also the Birds Bundle C: Family of 4 Set (S$128.00) that comes with fried chicken in dried chillis, hot & sour chazuke barramundi, spicy oriental bolognese, braised mapo tofu with rice, king prawn rice noodle, two portions of crispy french toast, three cups of bird's brown sugar boba milk, and a slice of cheesecake.

The Masses

Franco-Asian restaurant, The Masses, is the brainchild of Chef Dylan, who, through eleven ambitious and planned menu revamp, strives to serve the masses audaciously creative food that will excite even the most experienced diner.

It shows in a menu brimming with French-Asian persuasion—and at highly wallet-friendly prices. There’s the Jerusalem Artichoke (S$15.90) made with Miso butter, hazelnut, Kucai, and chives, and the simply-named Octopus (S$16.90) served in lobster porridge with homemade xo sauce, chorizo, and scallion.

Mains see a twist on familiar French classics and come by way of a Mushroom "Risotto" (S$20.90) made with Morel, Swiss Brown, King Oyster, and Nori mushroom varietal. There’ also an Angus Beef Cheek "Bourguignon" (S$22.90) that comes served with pomme puree, summer vegetables, tripe, chicharron, and a bright tamarind sauce.

Lolla

As a restaurant, Lolla is perennial. Having called 22 Ann Siang Road home for the past eight years, one can safely say it is the epitome of OG. If it could talk, it would regale you with stories of the restaurants and establishments that once graced this street, some still standing, stalwarts of the first wave, while many others, but temporary occupants of the vibrant House Ann Siang.

For this current Phase 2 Heightened Alert, Chef Johanne Siy has crafted a delivery menu that retains Lolla’s culinary DNA while still functioning as food that travels well and is a delight to enjoy from the comforts of home. Fans of the establishment must order the Sourdough Bread (S$6 for 1/4 Loaf) and pair it with the Kombu Butter (S$15 for 100g), made with Cheese & Japanese Kelp.

Elsewhere, the Spanish Tortilla with Jamon Iberico (S$29.00) and Duck Fat Potatoes (S$17.00) make for a great WFH lunch. But if you’re going to be fancy and all that, perhaps a serving of Lolla’s Grilled Octopus Served with Piquillo Pepper Sauce ($58.00/200g) might be something up your alley. One can’t, of course, order from Lolla’s and not get their Burnt Basque Cheesecake (S$70 for 6-Inches Round). It could be just the thing you need to get through these trying times.

Iko

Iko restaurant and bar is the brainchild of Chef Jemm Chiam, formerly of Le Binchotan, which closed in February this year. Iko means “Let’s go” in Japanese, a clarion call to invite diners to immerse in an urban luxe world of contemporary Japanese creations, easy Robata-grilled bites, sake, and Japanese-inspired cocktails.

It’s a philosophy duly reflected in a vibrant and dynamic delivery menu that embraces and fuses simple and familiar produce with ingredients designed to excite and tantalise the taste buds. Think toothsome sides like Brussels Sprouts (S$14) cooked with black garlic, garlic chip, lemon, or Broccolini (S$12) tossed in Raspberry dressing, Goma, and garlic confit.

Diners can also look forward to Zosui selections ranging from Prawn Zosui (S$20) cooked with prawn bisque and tobiko, and Asari Zosui (S$20) served with clams, Sake, and dashi. Fancy a little touch of luxe? IKO’s Luxe Box (S$88 per box) might just be what you need to reward yourself this second season of Phase 2. It comes with Iko Truffle Rice, Bafun Uni, Hokkaido Scallop, Ikura, and Botan Prawn.

Buona Terra

Housed in a classic black and white bungalow along Scotts Road, Buona Terra translates to 'Good Earth' and counts as neighbours exquisite Japanese omakase restaurant Ki-sho and The Song of India, the first Indian restaurant bestowed one Michelin star back in 2016. Here, Chef Denis Lucchi assumes the role of culinary Commander-in-Chief, a position he's helmed since Buona Terra opened its doors some nine years ago.

To replicate the Michelin star dining experience, Buona Terra serves up the Chef’s Experiential 5-Course Tasting Menu (from S$178), where Chef Denis curates and personalises your in-home dining experience with a menu that highlights the best seasonal ingredients of the week. There are also ala carte options should you be looking for something more mix and match in nature. The Oven-baked Scampi (S$58.00 for two pieces) is a great place to start, followed swiftly by an A5 Sendai Wagyu (S$130/150g, +S$48 for 200g) that comes served with mixed vegetables. End the meal with a classic Italian favourite, Tiramisu (S$18.00), made with Savoiardi biscuit and Coffee mascarpone cream.

Cuba Libre

The home of Latin American music and parties since 2006 has launched a new food delivery menu curated by Cuban chef Alex Moreno. At Cuba Libre, the party never stops, even if it’s confined within the comforts of home with nowhere to travel except for that small space between the bed and table. But hey, that’s what Spotify is for, am I right? Spin some classic Latin samba tunes, and before you know it, it can quickly feel as if Phase 2HA never happened.

To add to the convivial atmosphere at home are the vast and extensive food selection at Cuba Libre. From the cold tapas, diners can look forward to Cured Salmon stacked with diced beetroot and avocado (S$17.10) and Guacamole Bites with Cajun Shrimp (S$17.10). There’s also warm tapas of Ropa Vieja Bites (S$17.10) and Pork Belly Bites (S$17.10) to choose from.

Elsewhere, the familiar flavours of Pulled Beef Nachos (S$20.30) and Fish Barramundi Tacos (S$20.30) will delight and welcome diners new to the brave new world of Latin- American cuisine.

Gaig

Restaurant Gaig is led by executive chef Martí Carlos Martínez and Núria Gibert, daughter of Chef Carles Gaig to great hospitality effect. Now in its fourth year of operation, Restaurant Gaig unveils an enhanced and immersive delivery menu in a bid to transport diners to the typical home of a Catalan family.

Highlights include set menus that come chock full of plates and bites that mimics the culinary experience one gets when dining at Restaurant Gaig.

Vermouth Time for 2 (S$70)

Homemade potato chips, marinated olives, cold cut selection, crispy bread with tomato and olive oil, patatas bravas old school, two jamón croquettes, and two mushroom croquettes.

Menu Barcelona for 2 (S$130.00)

Ensaladilla Rusa, gambas all i pebre, bomba de la Barceloneta, Gaig’s traditional cannelloni with truffle sauce, and two portions of seafood fideuà.

Menu Cerdanya for 2 (S$145.00)

Crystal bread with tomato and olive oil, jamón ibérico acorn-fed 60 months cured, Atlantic salted cod fritters, Gaig’s traditional cannelloni with truffle sauce, meatballs and squid surf and turf, and two servings of ibérico pork and mushroom rice.

Fat Prince

Somewhere at Peck Seah Street, there’s a certain notable character of royal descent, feeding throngs of diners food that hails and is inspired by the intoxicating Middle East. For a long time, The Fat Prince welcomes customers into its gilded mise en scene heavy with plush furnishings, mood lighting, textured tiles, and artful velvet drapings. Now (or at least until June 13, so help me God), The Fat Prince wants to bring a slice of Middle Eastern realness to your WFH set-up—at least through the food they serve.

Naturally, there are Kebabs, Kebab Bowls, Mezze, and Dessert to choose from. But if value-for-money is what you’re hankering, then the Fat Bundles might be just what you need.

The Royal Lunch (S$29) comes with a choice of hummus, a choice of mezze, two Kebabs and a Chef’s selection dessert. For a fancier meal, there’s the aptly named Romance in Isolation (S$95) that comes with a choice of hummus, fried cauliflower, a whole spring chicken, an Okra Falafel salad, two Fat Cookies, and two cans of soft drinks.

Larger households are not forgotten. After all, Middle Eastern fare is all about community sharing. The Royal Feast (S$185) comes with a cashew hummus, an Artichoke hummus with flatbread, fried cauliflower, two whole spring chickens, one chopped kale, one Arabic mixed salad, four fat cookies, and four cans of soft drinks.

Kotuwa

Kotuwa is a shrine to all things Colombo where spices are fierce, chillies audaciously used, and a slow, burning heat that creeps up on you is but the norm. It starts with a quartet of perfectly spherical crab cutlets (S$16), fried till the outside is a perfect shade of golden. Breaking open the mound, a bouquet of meaty goodness greets you before revealing shreds of lamb and small chunks of potatoes with a subtle undercurrent of tang.

Lychee transforms from sweet and dainty to a monster of flavour with the Lychee Achcharu (S$8), which sees the unassuming fruit pickled in a delicate balance of mustard, apple cider, and chillies.

From the Meats section, there’s the Lamb Curry (S$24), the clear gold star of curries, if ever there was an award. Curries are judged on the robustness of their rempah, and here, it’s a joyful blend of sweet and savoury and a gaminess that veers on being comforting and familiar.

The Butcher’s Wife

The Butcher’s Wife at Tiong Bahru is a slice of gluten-free haven for celiacs and other diners with a lifestyle to maintain. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again. There’s nothing more 2020 than a restaurant that has dedicated itself to catering to an extremely niche portion of the community while still keeping things curiously interesting for dabblers of the gut-friendly slow food movement.

Diners can look forward to familiar appetisers such as the Dadinhos de Sago with spicy gula Melaka dip (S$13.00), and Crispy Masala Cashews & Chickpeas (S$8.00). Mains come by way of Sago Coconut Prawns (S$27.00), four pieces of Tiger Prawns coated in shredded coconut and sago crumbs, served with açai berry jam. There’s also a Black Bean Falafel (S$25.00) and Sweet Potato & Buckwheat Gnocchi (S$26.00) if you’re craving something a tad more filling. To end, the Bean to Bar Chocolate Tart (S$19.00), made with Venezuelan cacao beans, and served with caramel-miso ice cream, might be just what the doctor ordered.

Here’s something we seldom see—a delivery menu with food sustainability at its core. Driving this initiative is the good folks at Grand Hyatt Singapore who’s bringing care for Mother Nature to your table and at the same time, enticing diners with food selections that span international flavours. Interestingly, they’ve also curated a rather sizeable range of speciality produce at the Grand Marketplace where you can shop for curated items such as a Gold Moscato Oolong Tea (S$75) and Organic Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes (S$18/1kg).

From the cooked food section of the online shop, look forward to menu items such as the Wok-Fried Boston Lobster Noodle (S$58) and the Wok-Fried Tiger Prawns, Szechuan Style (SS25). Elsewhere, there’s a familiar round of Pizza Margherita (S$18) and Crispy Sustainable Fish and Chips (S$20.00) to look forward to. Desserts come by way of a Mix Fruit Tart (S$32 for 500g) and if you’re feeling a touch fancy, the Grand Hyatt Singapore Signature High Tea for 2 (S$90).
