SG Phase 2 Heightened Alert: 10 F&B outlets that deliver familiar comfort food to your home

Here we are again. One year later and as F&B establishment are slowly and surely making great strides in recouping their losses from the first Circuit Break in March 2020, we find ourselves back in the familiar throes of ordering in or picking up your orders if only to enjoy steep discounts doled out by restaurant and F&B owners, keen to keep the business afloat.

Here, I’ve compiled ten places that deliver some of the best familiar comfort food straight to your doorstep. Even if we can’t eat out and partake in merriment, lunch should, at the very least, be an event to celebrate as you dive into the news of COVID-19 cases in Singapore or sitting in the living room watching that one Netflix sitcom over and over again.

Enjoy Eating House

Enjoy Eating House prides itself on serving authentic local plates inspired by familiar flavours Singaporeans grew up eating. Take, for example, the Te Kah Bee Hoon (S$14++ for small; S$34++ for large), a plate of fried vermicelli served with thick-cut chunks of braised pig trotters, soft and tender like butter left outside on a balmy Singapore afternoon.

And what could be more quintessentially Singaporean than a bowl of Nyonya Curry Chicken (S$14++), a dish that demands an endless my-mother-makes-this-better discourse? It's an excellent iteration, nonetheless, though I haven't had a serving of curry with gravy this thick, you can almost cut it with a knife.

All prices indicated are for dine-in. Delivery prices may vary.

Phat Burger Bro

Where all burger joints are concerned, Phat Burger Bro makes a good case for joining the fraternity of fine gourmet burgers sprouting all across the island like rabbits in heat. It starts with the Classic Cheeseburger Double Phat Bro (S$18)—double because burger meat is good singularly but better when in pairs. If you're abstaining from meat because you care for the Earth and worry about climate change, the Southern Fried Chicken (S$15) would be right up your alley.

The Brewing Ground

As far as bespoke locale goes, The Brewing Ground ticks all the boxes. It’s situated within the larger compound of The Yards at Joo Chiat Place—or more endearingly known to my mother as Telok Kurau English School. The menu at a cafe such as this is familiar at best, predictable at worst—or so I thought. But it is in the discernment of taste and flavour where The Brewing Ground departs sharply and defiantly from the gaggle of new cafes that seem to sprout all across this island as if it’s 2010 all over again.

It starts with the colourful Avocado and Ricotta Tartine (S$17) served with scrambled eggs (S$5) and thick-cut maple bacon (S$5) that, without a doubt, will bring all the boys around Joo Chiat and the greater East region to The Yard. I also like the Breakfast Burger (S$20) and fully endorse this decadent choice to the start of the day.

Ajumma

Signature Beef Kalbi (PHOTO: Zat Astha/Yahoo Lifestyle SEA)
Signature Beef Kalbi (PHOTO: Zat Astha/Yahoo Lifestyle SEA)

Unlike other Korean establishments along the streets of Telok Ayer peddling aspirations of authenticity, Ajumma’s stand out amongst the crowd of cookie-cutter bulgogi’s to serve food that is curated, finessed, and, I’m glad to report, nowhere as dross as the food court varietals of Saba-minced-chicken-kimchi bento box.

There is, of course, Ajumma’s Signature Beef Kalbi (S$14.90) that has since become synonymous with its name, featuring thick slices of USDA Prime beef, slathered with an in-house marinade and tossed (vigorously and swiftly, I would imagine) in a wok for a lingering smokey flavour. The Spicy Pork and Charred Cabbage (S$10.90), like its beef buddy, is immaculately seasoned and well-tossed as if there’s an actual Ajumma in the kitchen slaving away behind a wok. It’s red, it’s fiery, but it’s not too spicy to make the whole dish intolerable.

The Tiramisu Hero

At this point, I'm certain everyone knows of The Tiramisu Hero, one of the OG entrants at the height of Singapore’s then-burgeoning cafe scene back in 2012. Nine years on, founders Aileen’s and Peggy’s vision for a ‘pretty, cosy, unpretentious and fun environment for foodies to be the glutton’ lives on at their original outpost at Tyrwhitt Road.

As their moniker suggests, the hero product here is Tiramisu (S$7.50), which they sell in various flavours including Matcha, Oreo, and Lemon Lavender. Italian desserts aside, The Tiramisu Hero also serves up hearty plates inspired by familiar local favourites and international flavours.

There’s also the ‘Phase 2 Heightened Alert’ special set that comes with an appetiser, mains, and beverage. Highlights from their Set A1 (S$35) includes Smoked Duck Salad, Classic Dry Mee Hoon Kueh, Pesto Gyu, and Iced Lemon Tea. Set B3 (S$60) feeds more diners with dishes like Soba Salad, Truffle Fries, Vegetarian Mee Hoon Kueh, Vegan meatball Pasta, Hummus Pasta, and Iced Lemon Tea.

The Whole Kitchen

If you’re looking for gluten-free food, low in natural sugars, Low-carb, and vegan, then look no further than The Whole Kitchen, with a moniker that suggests offerings that are paleo- and keto-friendly. Even if you’re not currently on a specific health-centric diet, the food at The Whole Kitchen is yummy enough to entice and power you through the day.

Their all-day menu features menu items such as Raisin Toast (S$9), Avo’ Toast (S$18) and everyone’s favourite breakfast power-up, a Banana Toastie (S$18) that comes with banana, house-made peanut butter, and house-made hazelnut cacao, spread on a country classic loaf.

Lunch sees more innovative sandwich variations. There’s the Truffle Brie Toastie (S$16) that comes with Brie de Meaux Truffles and Emmental, Mumbai Sandwich (S$15), packed with such South Asian goodness like Chaat Masala and Kasundi, and a Spanish Anchovy and Tomato Tartine (S$18).

Nic & Tom Eatery

Tuckshop Rice (PHOTO: Zat Astha/Yahoo Lifestyle SEA)
Tuckshop Rice (PHOTO: Zat Astha/Yahoo Lifestyle SEA)

Founded in 2019, Nic & Tom Eatery has firmly established itself as masters of their own fates, as evidenced by an unending crowd throughout the day, flocking to this Serangoon Gardens outpost in search for food that’s unpretentious, down-to-earth, and, given its locale, a massive bang for the buck. There are, after all, few places that will sell a bowl of Tuckshop Rice for an eye-popping S$1.90, complete with a sunny-side-up egg, crispy fried pork, and a secret sauce that could almost make this a meal in itself.

There’s also a serving of Seafood Cheese Beehoon (S$9.90) that, for all intents and purposes, really sets itself up as being rich and creamy to a fault—at least from its outlook. Yet, what you get is a dish that starts with an intensely savoury seafood broth to which cheddar cheese is infused, not added. Elsewhere a Pig Trotter Rice (S$4.90), which, though simple, is great for when you hate being bogged down by silly things like choices. It comes with a smattering of salted vegetables, a nice touch of acidity to these chunks of fatty goodness: fats, carbs, salt. A sane person could hardly complain.

Apollo Coffeehouse & Bar

Apollo paints a picture of simplicity with an overt rejection of filigree. The walls, floor, fixtures, and furniture are in various hues of cream or light brown—an aesthetic that is so 2019 but ages incredibly well. It starts with a dramatic Tofu Hummus (S$13.40) that I’ve seen diners order to have with cups of espresso, which honestly is intriguing. There’s also a touch of calculated risk-taking in the Whipped Feta And Honey (S$14.90). Elsewhere, there’s a Miso Bacon Risotto (S$23.50) made with brown Japanese rice that is truly breathtaking with its overtones of umami, a whirlwind of flavours, and rice that has been cooked perfectly.

The Fabulous Baker Boy

The Fabulous Baker Boy here refers to Chef Juwanda Hassim, who takes his cakes at the ‘Big Love Bakery’ very seriously. With a rotating selection of 40 cakes (though, seriously, who’s counting anymore), Chef Ju takes liberal inspirations from celebrities and classic cake flavours for his creations, counting in his roster such gems like Nutty Monkey and Strawberry Shortcake, and Ms Whitney Houston and Ms Diana Ross from his Diva Series.

But cakes aren’t the only things he peddles. From his ‘Soul Kitchen, ’ diners can expect crowd favourites like Duck Confit (S$26), Lamb Shank (S$32), BBQ Beef Grilled Cheese Sandwich (S$22), and Corn Beef Hash (S$26), to name a few. If being cooped at home means breakfast is an event, look no further than his quartet of pancake varieties—Plain, Blueberry, Valrhona Choco Chip, and Raspberries (S$14–S$16)—to start your WFH right.

Takeaway and delivery details

  • Big Love Bakery operates daily; Soul Kitchen closes Monday.

Atlas Coffeehouse

Summer Chicken Stew (PHOTO: Zat Astha/Yahoo Lifestyle SEA)
Summer Chicken Stew (PHOTO: Zat Astha/Yahoo Lifestyle SEA)

If there's one thing I've learned from observing what Singaporeans order at places like Atlas Coffeehouse, is that people love, love, love their classic English breakfast in whatever shape and form it takes. Grab a menu and scroll briefly past the first eight or so typical brunch selections, and get the Bacon Kedgeree (S$23.50). Yes, a Kedgeree—that classic British recipe with origins in colonial India and a building block to the Ayurvedic way of living.

After that, turn to the Lunch menu and get yourself the Summer Chicken Stew (S$19.30), again, something I did not see on any table the day I visited for lunch. Give yourself some time to enjoy this enthusiastically seasoned stew cooked with a tender-to-a-fault chicken leg, sun-dried tomatoes, potatoes, and carrots. It’s the kind of thing you eat when trying to cut back on carbs but still want to feel full.
