22 best mooncakes to savour this Mid-Autumn Festival 2022

Growing up, the Mid-Autumn Festival has always been a special holiday for me. As a child, I remember lighting paper lanterns and admiring its colourful glow while walking around the neighbourhood with friends and family. Now, the festivities revolve around my next favourite thing: mooncakes.

Every year, restaurants, bakeries and hotels go above and beyond to present us delightful mooncakes that come in all forms and flavours, be it the traditional ones with double yolks or snowskin mooncakes in contemporary flavours like durian, bird’s nest, champagne truffle or strawberry tequila. And I haven’t even started talking about their creative packaging yet!

In preparation for the onslaught of mooncakes that’s to come this year, we’ve rounded up 22 best mooncakes to savour this Mid-Autumn Festival 2022.

1. Ding Mooncake

It uses top grade AAA mao shan wang, directly imported from Pahang Highlands, to give the richest durian experience ever, as each mooncake is stuffed with dense durian puree. In fact, each box weighs 720g!

After two full seasons of R&D, Ding Mooncake has finally released a new line-up of snowskin mooncakes. This year’s flavours incorporate unique flavours such as Korean Yuzu, Gula Melaka, French Earl Grey Lavender and Treviso Tiramisu to create delectable and modern snowskin mooncakes that’ll be a hit with kids and adults alike.

Golden Moments has been recognised as the highly-raved revolutionist for premium durian products, such as its truffle durian snowskin mooncake in 2019, which came with actual 24k pure gold plates!

This year, Golden Moments’ star product, the Signature Mao Shan Wang Durian Snowskin Mooncakes (S$128.80 for a box of four), is back by popular demand. Each mooncake is a real sight to behold— the bamboo charcoal snowskin is dusted with sparkling gold dust, and on the inside is 100% pure mao shan wang durian flesh.

Golden Moments’ other snowskin mooncakes are equally gorgeous. Its Docello Hazelnut Chocolate Mao Shan Wang Durian Snowskin Mooncake (S$128.80 for a box of four) combines rich and decadent chocolate with luscious durian flesh, while the Lychee Martini Snowskin Mooncake (S$108.80 for a box of four) combines fruity lychee with two martini-infused truffle balls.

Making its debut this year is Golden Moments’ new Golden Lava Custard Mooncake (S$88.80 for a box of six), which puts an innovative spin on the traditional baked mooncake by inserting a molten lava core of salted egg in the middle. I loved how these mooncakes came in mini sizes, so I didn’t have to feel guilty about hoarding these indulgent treats all to myself!

Here’s the best part— in celebration of its 5th anniversary, Golden Moments is having an exclusive 1-for-1 promotion for its mooncake products till 10 August 2022! Every box of mooncakes will also come with S$200 worth of lifestyle vouchers from local brands such as Zalora, Ruhens and Braun. 3. Carlton Hotel Singapore

Mooncake 2022 - Carlton Hotel

This has got to be one of the most unique mooncake boxes I’ve seen this season. Carlton Hotel Singapore and Michelin Guide-recognised Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant’s mooncakes are presented in a stellar, one-of-a-kind trapezium-shaped box that reminds me of a designer handbag.

Exclusively designed by Carlton Hotel Singapore, the trapezium-shaped box opens up two-way to reveal a vibrant pink interior, with shelving that’s inspired by antique oriental cabinet displays. This ties in nicely with the hologram floral motifs on the front of the box, making this a really exquisite box that’s great for gifting or keeping.

Not to mention, in a bid to go eco-friendly, the box is actually made of sustainable materials such as wood, and the cutleries provided within are wooden rather than plastic.

My personal favourite out of this year’s mooncake line-up is the newly launched Mini Sakura Milk Tea Snowskin Mooncake (S$80 for eight pieces), which combines two of my most loved ingredients: milk tea and cherry blossoms.

Each mooncake dons a beautiful pastel pink colour and features milk tea-infused lotus paste with cherry blossom. Topping it off are chocolate crunch notes, which gave each bite a well-needed textural contrast. With its fragrant and floral cherry blossom flavours, it really brought me back to Japan and reminded me of seasonal sweets and mochi!

Those who prefer zestier flavours will delight in the Mini Green Tea, Yuzu and Plum Snowskin Mooncake (S$80 for eight pieces), which pairs subtle green tea with citrusy yuzu. Durian lovers will adore the Mini ‘Mao Shan Wang’ Durian Snowskin Mooncake (S$88 for eight pieces), as it uses luscious durian pulp for that extra indulgence.

While Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant and Carlton Hotel Singapore’s range of traditional baked mooncakes include perennial favourites such as the Traditional Mixed Nuts (S$86 for four pieces), Red Lotus Paste with Double Yolk (S$86 for four pieces) and White Lotus Paste with Single or Double Yolk (from S$82), our suggested pick for the season is the delightful Mini Walnut Moontarts with Yolk (S$80 for eight pieces).

These little nuggets consist of smooth white lotus paste, salted egg yolk and a walnut crust. Each piece is bite-sized, making it all the more easier to pop into your mouth like an addictive snack. For the health-conscious, a low sugar alternative without yolk is available at S$78 for eight pieces.

Selected credit and/or debit cards are applicable for early bird discounts! From 25 July to 12 August 2022, enjoy 30% off all mooncakes, while purchases from 13 August to 10 September 2022 will be eligible for 25% off (one to 30 boxes) or 30% off (31 boxes and above). Do note that mooncake prices mentioned above are nett.

4. Aroma Truffle

With much anticipation, Aroma Truffle’s highly-raved truffle-infused Mao Shan Wang durian mooncakes are back again this year!

These 24K gold-dusted treats are made with real, air-flown Black Winter Truffles from Spoleto, Italy, and Mao Shan Wang durians from Pahang, so it’s no wonder that they’ve been quickly sold out every year since it was first introduced in 2019. Despite the stark contrasting taste profiles, Singaporeans just seem to love this exquisite mooncake, which brings together the world’s boldest and most distinctive flavours from the East and West.

In fact, despite Aroma Truffle producing 4,000 handcrafted boxes this season, there was an overwhelming amount of pre-orders, leaving only 2,600 boxes left for purchase. Talk about fastest fingers first!

Each box of Truffle MSW Snowskin Mooncake (S$108) comes with eight bite-sized pieces of pure luxury, consisting four Onyx Truffle MSW Snowskin Mooncakes and four Frosty MSW Snowskin Mooncakes. Also included are a set of gold-plated cutlery and a complimentary tube of Eight Treasures Organic Tea, which makes this a classy gift choice for families, friends or business associates.

The Onyx Truffle MSW Snowskin Mooncake has a truffle-infused snowskin and is filled with rich Mao Shan Wang durian flesh. To complete the look, the charcoal-coloured mooncake is topped with a dash of shiny gold dust. On the other hand, you’ll be able to taste the pureness of Pahang’s Mao Shan Wang durian with the Frosty MSW Snowskin Mooncake, as it’s made with no added artificial flavouring, preservatives or sugar— just pure, creamy and tangy Mao Shan Wang!

Andaz Singapore has always been one of my favourite hotels because of its vibrant, fresh and modern vibes. Situated in the heart of several cultural districts such as Bugis, Bras Basah, Kampong Glam and Little India, Andaz Singapore has always been about exploring Singapore through fresh perspectives.

Its newest Cantonese restaurant, 5 ON 25, opened its doors on the 25th floor of the hotel in January 2022 and has just released its first-ever line-up of mooncakes. How exciting!

Savour a total of six baked mooncakes, including three flavours exclusive to the 5 ON 25 brand— Teh Gao Siew Dai, Ruby Pandan and 5 ON 25’s very own Signature Tea Blend.

The other three remaining mooncakes are classic flavours, such as the timeless Silver Lotus OG, Silver Lotus++ which has two full yolks, and The Dating Longans, which combines red date lotus paste with longan meat.
