Yuki Kashiwagi halts work due to rare condition

9 Jun – Japanese singer Yuki Kashiwagi has recently suspended her performance activities to focus on her treatment, after finding out that she is suffering from a rare disease.

As reported on CNA, the AKB48 member recently found out about her health problem when she appeared on a TV programme called "Clinic Where You Can Meet the Doctor" a few days ago. During an examination, the attending doctor noticed a dark mass in her spinal cord, stating that a tumour could be present.

Yuki also admitted to having experienced numbness in her left hand and left foot, and was told on the show that it could be a resulting effect from the condition.

On 8 June, her management agency announced that Yuki has officially been diagnosed with syringomyelia, a disorder in which a cyst or cavity forms within the spinal cord, and that she will be taking a hiatus from her showbiz work to focus on her surgery and subsequent treatment.

The singer will be cancelling her appearance in the "AKB48 The Audishow" that was scheduled on 11 and 12 June, while her July concert and her upcoming collaboration single with WACK have also been postponed.

In a statement released on social media, Yuki apologised to her fans for postponing her projects, and expressed hope that she will be able to appear more healthily in front of her fans in the future.
